Upgrade the drivers in the onboard Intel gpu and it will run Q2 in OGL.  Runs decent but you can't run anything much better then Q2.  Q3A chokes.

Well I ain't gonna take a picture of mine, it would be pointless, just a black case, and I ain't about to crack it open and void the warrantee just in case something happens. Nothing special to see anyway, not custom built, just one of those name brand mass produced models.

I got no complaints about it so far other than the fact that I'm a little disappointed that 1GB of video memory really isn't enough to run some of the newer games I've been tinkering with at lightning fast speeds like I thought it would. I guess I'd have to shell out big bucks for one of the top shelf 4GB models if I wanted that. Nah, fuck that, I'm good.

never updated any drivers for intel onboard, but.......

My bro just got a new laptop, $499, an HP + AMD "w/ radeon". I am sure plenty would get excited over it and think omg, radeon's name is on it, it has a vid card!!!...but basically what I told him is that I think it'll be at least better than onboard intel else radeon wouldn't want their name on it. Turns out, it gets 880 timerefresh on a local server and 500 fps on an active dm server. Anyway.... from the price of the laptop you can see that it ain't top of the line or anything, but 6GB of Ram, 800gb HD, and a 17.3 inch widescreen.. it plays q2 better than any setup I've seen. Sam's Club... I may even get one if they're still around haha.

Also, intel onboard runs q3a better for me than q2, or it did on my last setup that was about as shitty, maybe a little better... uhh 1.8ghz centrino duo I think? with 1gb of ram, onboard gfx

1gb of vram is plenty, more is cool but 1gb is enough

vram wont exactly increase performance the more you get, but you are able to cache much more allowing you to run much smoother on a higher resolution problem would be that you are running a 6400 series card which isnt exactly a top of the line... no reason to shell out for a 4gb vid card if you only have a 17in monitor, so dont waste the money

The GTX 560 Ti is a 1 GB card. However, they create many cards that are 1 GB or more. just because the card has more GB memory, doesn't necessarily mean it's faster, or performs better. It's actually about how many processors and mhz speed on the card. Tom's hardware has benchmark tests of various cards. i had to learn the hard way, about buying graphics cards. They have many cards and they name them all similiar, so the average joe don't know which one to buy. good marketing strategy for them, sucks for the buyer.

and its easy to tell a rough performance mark for the card just by model number... maybe you should do your research instead

ATI/AMD keep things in a kind of a number order, Nvidia doesn't.  They've gone from thousands to hundreds a couple times now and different letters mean different things at different times.  The Radeon series had the numbers starting with the 7xxx series, then after the 9xxx came out the next one was Xxxxx (X meaning 10), then they replaced the X with HD.

I think the idea of this thread topic was more something like this

Runs smoother on a higher resolution... exactly how does that NOT equate to increased performance? I could make yet another smartassed comment, but I'm gonna be nice to you for once and just say that not everyone is as dumb as you want to believe. Like Golgo mentioned, I'm also aware that video card memory size does not always equal faster gaming graphics. It's just plain old memory. Just like afro-engineering my motherboard to use 900 terabytes of RAM isn't going to make my PC run faster, a video card requires chipsets that run faster to USE that memory faster. It's like a car engine. You can have a HUUUUUGE fucking motor in a car, but without the proper transmission and gear ratios, it ain't gonna win races.

I know I'm pretty scummy and trashy, but having that much clutter in my face would drive me 14 different kinds of bananas. I'm still wondering if Quadz ever cleaned up his computer room. Last picture I saw that he posted, it looked like a bomb went off in there. Stacks of paper and crap piled EVERYWHERE!

I tape and edit videos on the side, the DVD's and tapes are from that.  I've almost got the two jobs I'm working on done, then it goes back to a nearly empty desk.  I try to keep things handy though os I've got a card reader, an extra USB cable, scanner & pens/pencils handy on there at all times. And a clock.  Some stuff is on there so the kids don't get ahold of it.

You can't tell from the pic but it's dark down there, even in the summer.  I use the flashlight to look behind the machines for rewiring and just in case the power does go out (then it would be near pitch black).  I've got a flashlight you put on your head in the desk and razor knives too.  Never can have enough flash lights and razor's.

Wow, i didn't think anyone else used VCR's anymore. it's still reliable method of recording. must have been upgraded VCR's to rewind tapes faster.

I take VHS's & put then on DVD for people.  I work with someone who still has a fully working VHS camcorder!  I use the DVCam VCR mainly to record stuff off my computer.
