video settings

i want to change the brightness in my video settings but every time i load q2 it doesn't stay the way i like it. would it be something in my config that is causing it?

i have gl_modulate 2.2 and intensity 2 but i don't wanna touch those. i just want my brightness setting in "video" option to stay how i like it

The brightness setting in the "Video" options is the same as vid_gamma.

If you want to do it manually the command is vid_gamma,  followed by a value. Typical values range from 0.3 ----> 1.0
Depends on your video card and how much brightness you have set your Windows Desktop to.

To experiment just go into Quake and key in console "vid_gamma 0.5" (for a starting point), then key in "vid_restart" to enable it. If it's too dark or too light just change the value up or down in increments of .10 until you have a setting you like. The last value you use should update your config.cfg file (vid_gamma).

Also you might like upping your gl_modulate number higher. You will be able to see better in dark areas. I use 6.0

I know you didn't ask about this, but since the topic is "video settings", I guess I'll throw this out there.

I was playing around with NASCAR Racing 2003 and noticed that as I was driving along, the painted yellow line on the track that separates the main racing surface of the track from the apron was constantly blurry about 2 car lengths ahead of me, but would render clearly in that spot as I got closer to it. I went looking in the graphic options of the game and it didn't have any setting for anisotropic filtering. So then I closed out the game and opened up the NVIDIA Settings located in the system tray by the clock.

Obviously this will only apply to those who have an NVIDIA video card with the NVIDIA Taskbar utility installed.

If you go click the "manage 3D settings options on the left side, then click the "program settings" on the right side, it'll show a list of all your installed programs and games and will have a bunch of settings you can customize for each program. Most of them by default will have something like "(application controlled)" enabled. But if for some reason you have a program that doesn't feature advanced video settings, you can tweak how the video card handles them.

Anway, the problem I had going on was anisotropic filtering, where texture images on an angled surface do not render clearly at far distances. The setting for anisotropic filtering for NASCAR Racing 2003 was set to "application controlled". So I switch it to as high as it will go (16x). Problem solved. Lines on the track render with defined edges (not blurry edges like before) no matter how far away it is.

So after I noticed how much cleaner all the track surface images were showing up in NASCAR 2003, I went back into it and set the anisotropic filtering to 16x for Quake2 as well. Since then, I've noticed that floor and wall surfaces in Quake2 show up a lot cleaner now.
