I been on dialup so long frame rates is something I only get when I go down to my daughters clinic and play  - which isn't much anymore... or at least as much as it used to be.

Why does monitor refresh affect fps in Quake2?My CRT is an ancient KTX that can go only to 85 refresh max yet in linux I get 400-700 fps using Quake2max and in windows with regular opengl only 59.999 max.

Quake3 is whatever I set com_maxfps to = 125 fps.

Can you not use a fancy client like q2max or q2e to fix your limited fps on your new LCD?

My LCD is capable of a max of 60 frames per second display rate.  It's not variable.  It wants to run at 1600x1200 screen resolution at 60fps.

I can't get more than 60fps, period.  

Now, that said, as I alluded to in a different thread (the "Hello" thread),
I'm discovering that my real issues are not monitor related.  But, I'm still testing the theory and can't quite make a proclamation about it.  (heheh some might say the real issue is one of skill.)  I'll be reporting back on that front soon.

I've got news for you, Dukie.  I don't do wash.  And, it makes for easier storage when the clothes start standing up by themselves.

And you're right about the "camper" bind.  You can always count on that, even when it's not appropriate to the situation.  For me, it just injects some levity into the game, particularly when someone feels they have to go off on some dissertation on why what they're doing is not camping.  Funny stuff...

My performance problems (no, not THAT performance problem, lol) began right at the time I switched monitors, so I got faked out thinking "well, gee, the only thing I changed was this crt to an lcd", but it appears to have been a quirk of coincidence.  Still testing, though, as some nic or another, before I'm ready to say that I found my pills again.  Prognosis, though, looks promising.

Slikk, is there a way to keep the CRT stowed somewhere (back porch--that's where my old one is--closet, trunk of car, etc.) and then hauled out when you want to be your old fragging self?

Thanks for the kind words, Johnny.  I do think I'm going to be ok now, which means " no excuses" from here on in, lol.  By the way, my folks get all my old (which usually isn't that old) pc parts to bring them up to speed, so Dad's enjoying the 19" CRT now.  Don't think he's doing any gaming, however.  

Now, if only I could beat JQuestt!  hmm, maybe an excuse would work for that, too...

Hi, this is my first post in this forum.

Didn't you know that LCD (TFT) monitors have a slow response time? I would bet it's that slow response time that limits your frame rates (not to confuse with screen refresh rate, by the way).

On a quick search (not to say, it's the best link that I could come up with, but anyway), I found this explanation and background:

I also had a TFT monitor, but took it back to the shop, for various reasons (annoying humming sound, when dimming the screen brightness; AND:
fps limit around 30-40 fps).

The slowness of the TFT crystals (?) accounts for the absence of flickering at 60 Hz screen refresh rate, but at the same time induces a slow response time and a low maximum frame rate.

Actually, I've found that as long as I set Windows to run at 60 HZ, and set Q2 to run at cl_maxfps 60, the game runs fine at any screen size I choose.  60HZ is the monitor's native refresh rate.

Now granted, I'd like to have more options to vary my cl_maxfps setting, but that's not a choice I can make without hosing the video and gameplay.

The response time is fine now.  My issues with Quake2 now and Xquake's servers in particular is it seems I'm constantly having to change other variables, like mouse speed, rate, etc, to have good gameplay, sometimes even between map changes.  But, what are you going to do?  If that's as bad as it gets, so be it.  It is what it is...
