tastyspleen servers already have static ip's :) if you yourself want a static IP you will need to contact your ISP, in which case usually an additional fee is required

I was told by support that I have to have the server or data center lock in the ip so as it gets priority routed????????????

ok... what exactly are you trying to do?

data centers are remote servers, like tastyspleen, that will have a static IP, and you can run servers from them for games or web or whatever...

if you are wanting a static IP to your home, first your ISP has to support doing that (which if they dont, shitty isp) and then generally its an additional fee, and once you have a static IP you can host servers from home... but nothing will need to be done outside of setting up the static IP

you cant really get static routes through the internet as routing tables are large and automatically generated and no company would care to go through the trouble of setting you up a static route

Having a static IP makes no difference to routing. The internet doesn't work that way, it's not like a network of tubes or something and it's not like you can have a special road built between your IP and some destination IP. Any number of packets can take any number of routes between two hosts and there is no way to predict or force them to prefer one route over another for all time and all traffic conditions.

The network is always seeking the shortest route from IP A to IP B, whether that's the smallest number of hops or the shortest period of time depends on the nature of the traffic between A and B and the nature of the other traffic across the routers between A and B. This is what the fight over Net Neutrality is all about.

Different ISP have several routes and several "peer" connections between their network and adjacent ones in case of hardware failures or traffic congestion. The route you get today is not the route you might get tomorrow. The only way to get anything like a preferred route is to have lots of traffic and lots of money to spend on it.

Just to add something; you could probably improve routing on the server side.  It's probably negligable, and it would do nothing for the route from the client to the server.

The server side could have a device like an FCP (http://www.internap.com/business-internet-connectivity-services/route-optimization-flow-control/) , that would choose a carrier based on metrics like latency (not practical to account for in the internet routing table).

Generally the provider game is to get the data off their network as soon as possible (reducing traffic within their backbones), or to send traffic at a set amount to certain providers based on cost.  If you let the BGP algorithm have its way it would be shortest AS-path, or autonmous systems.  In other words:

route x(1) AS:1,5,6,7
wins over
route x(2) AS:3:8:5:6:7

BGP is a distance vector routing protocol at a high level, so yes, shortests numbers of hops.  But really not (hops as in routers), and most large provider backbones are now MPLS, so you won't even see the hops in traceroute.

Ahh I see what you meant dev. You wanted a better or more and shorter effecient path/route to the Q2 server (TS).

I think you can pay your isp to have a special route for you that will go straight to their backbone.
But It costs a gazillion.
