Strong opinions? Yeah, it's obviously HORRIBLE what he did. Helping terminally ill people end their lives on their own terms by their own choice rather than letting them shrivel up into an unrecognizable pile of skin of bones because it's what someone thinks God wants for them.

The guy did a great service to his patients. In that respect, he was a better "doctor" than most of the doctors who would treat terminally ill cancer patients. He alleviated their suffering rather than prolonging it for both the patient and the family and friends of the patient. If you've ever had to watch someone slowly die of it, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Personally, I'd rather die getting broadsided by an 18 wheeler doing 80mph and get it over all at once rather than dying one organ at a time over a period of several months.

I personally don't care. I think that what he did was a crime, but I don't necessarily think it's that horrible. He has just always been a convenient butt for jokes. In fact I think he was the last great butts of the 90's seeing as Johnnie Cochran and Michael Jackson are already out of the picture.

Suicide is not a crime. Corporal punishment (which I agree with by the way) is more of a crime than suicide since the person doing the dying is usually not a willing participant.

I think you're pretty ignorant on the concept of both suicide as a crime throughout history and exactly what Jack Kevorkian did.

I find it strange he knew he was dying but didn't (at least the article didn't say so) try to commit suicide.  Wouldn't that be like the cook not eating their own cooking?  Maybe he didn't because he couldn't bring himself to do it & he needed someone to kill him like he did to the others.

Being that you're a churchy little sheep, I can see why you'd be inclined to believe the same way they did in the dark ages back when people thought of suicide as a crime, the world being flat, talking snakes, magical apples, water becoming wine, etc.

So let me rephrase the question. Why do YOU call it a crime?

here's a question:

Why is it that the very same people who think that every single life is sacred regardless of the wants of the mother, and that every suicide is some sort of crime against God, have no problem with repeatedly killing others for land and power?

Historical precedent would seem to show that God cares a lot less about "killing" and "death" than his followers do, and that murder would be the only one he finds objectionable. (unless it's the firstborn children of an entire north african nation)

The commandment may be paraphrased in the current english translation, but I'm pretty sure "THOU SHALT NOT MURDER" means something very different than "THOU SHALT NOT HELP SOMEONE DIE WHO ASKED YOU TO ASSIST THEM IN ENDING THEIR SUFFERING".

P.S. Notice how the only people here to mention religion are the ones that have a general problem with it. That focalor, is a red herring.

funny, I'd say the people who are afflicted by religion are the ones with the problem.

Not having something that I don't want or need and which blinds me to readily available facts, doesn't seem all that bad to me.
Certainly not bad enough to be classified as a problem.

Show me one successful suicide that got convicted.



  I understand the problem with it in depressed but otherwise healthy people,  but people on their last mile and want to drop out early are fine by me.

My grandfather and great uncle both did that within the same year.  One 80 something i think and on the brink of not being able to take care of himself,
the other also on in years, not quite that old, but dealing with crippling arthritis pain.   The shock/sadness of it to the family was regrettable,  but I wouldn't have denied them the right to do it at that point in their lives.

Could have used one last conversation with both of them though.
