wav timers r natural in EU for TDM and 1v1 after years or using league approved proxy's BiteMe, Nitro and Xania
personally didn't  use timers til 2006 and now i wouldn't play without it because watching on clock instead on opponent is f.boring

I figured as much. Considering how poorly documented the process of that specific event is, I don't feel horribly ashamed of myself for not knowing more about it, especially since I was quite inactive at the time. So thanks for filling me in! However, the Quad Damage tournament did not take place in 2005, but in the 2007 edition of Quakecon.

In my opinion, observing Quakecon 2005 is interesting mainly in one aspect. It is one of extremely few competitions since the golden era (98-00), that showcase some of the top "contemporary" American players - and even in a manner that does them some kind of justice. I truly doubt that players like Doze and Dahang would have had their reputations ever cross the Atlantic if it wouldn't have been for either of the Quakecons.

Perhaps i'd categorize you with the likes of odium and optimizer in skill level in 01-02 during those oldie scandanavian tourneys.

2001 was very different from the following few years. That was before Purri had entered the stage, and Damiah was still struggling to find his way to the railgun on dm7, so to speak. The list of the top players from around then would be quite different, and you would probably just frown at some of their names. I was definitely not a top player either in 2001.

2002-2003 was Purri's reign of fear. He was basically untouchable... I would definitely say that he was at a level of his own back then. The rest of us (Damiah, Odium and myself) were a few steps behind. It would be a couple of years until he was properly challenged. Provi, Damiah and Syanid stepped up and the rest is history, as they say.

Optimizer was an amazing TDM player in latter years, but back then he was stuck on his old 56k, and not really a competitor either way. He's never been a very accomplished dueler.

I absolutely disagree. He never delivers game equal to his abilities in friendly duels, and even quite uniquely so. His EAP game vs Norman proves this, because a 40% IsBjörn would never beat any PLD winner OR runner-up.

That's a horrible rundown, but not very unusual, I guess.. I've always loved dm2 as a map for duels. I recognize how poorly balanced it is, but it's architectonic qualities balance that out more then sufficiently. ;p On the other hand, dm1 ain't the most well balanced map either, but people have gotten so good at it, that it actually doesn't matter too much.

I would really like to recommend everybody to give the entire rdm map pack a second or third chance. rdm1 would not be a favorite, but it's definitely a good map. rdm4, rdm5 and rdm10 especially, are absolutely amazing duel maps, and it's such a pity and surprise, really, that they haven't gotten more attention.
