I wouldn't say they "hide" anything....but everything else is pretty much right

what I thought when reading it.

"field of vision" is kind of self-explanatory... and yes, in essence lowering your fov has a small affect on your aim for the better. Maybe "improving" is the wrong word(because fov wouldn't be the only variable in it), but undoubtedly, a bigger target facilitates both flicks and lining up your shots. At 90 FOV, I feel like I'm sacrificing a little... both in how much I can see + movement-wise, but only barely. I use 100, but somewhere between 95-100 is probably best if I had to guess.

Human field of view is nearly 180 degrees, if you are looking straight ahead you can almost see something off to the side at somewhere in the neighborhood of 85 degrees on each side. It varies. If you have tunnel vision, see a doctor.

The rendering on screen of wide FOV is difficult because the screen isn't curved and wrapping around your head the way you need to perceive it. A 90 degree FOV shows no real distortion but when you start pushing out to 120-160 FOV the entire field is distorted since it's compressing that FOV into a field that's only 80 to 90 degrees for your eyes. This causes stuff to be compressed and appear smaller and more distant.

Whether it improves your game or not depends on how well you can cope with the distortion. I prefer a wide FOV because I can see players coming in from the side and deal with more targets at once. It does take a little better mouse control to get on target but you can adjust the sensitivity to compensate.

What you're saying is right qwazy, but it's not looking at all things considered. Personally, I never lose track of my opponent no matter the fov, due to sound.. so.. the benefit associated with any player that you "see coming", I would have already possessed seconds prior(due to sound, nearly without exception). Yes, I know you're thinking about FFA probably but, in FFA I tend to avoid situations where this could even happen altogether(situations in which I would be likely to lose track of opponent(s))....if you get what I'm saying. My ability to adapt to any fov or sensitivity is fine as well, but that's not quite the primary, dependent factor here in my opinion.

What I meant by lower fov "facilitating" aim instead of improving it, is that it makes aiming a LITTLE easier. In no way does that mean "lowering your fov will make your aim better" as a rule, though. And the benefits you describe from using a higher FOV can be more effectively achieved by other means... imo :>

Also: In the highest competitive level of quake 2, it's movement > aim. Much of one's choice for FOV should depend on movement.

I preferred 110+ for similar reasons years ago, and now I don't mainly due to the reasons I explained.. was just sharing why.

i just picked an fov of 110 a long time ago... lowered my sens a few times til it felt like the right balance between a nice low sens for aiming/movement and still be able to move it fast enough... and stuck with it :) i know a lot of decent/good players in all of the quakes use an fov around 90 or 100... but it really doesnt matter much, its what works for you and what you get used to

most of the cpm players swear by a 130 fov (max in cpma i believe) but i never saw the point :P

also paril i disagree with your views on different aspect ratios relating to fov... but i dont feel like arguing with you right now about it

There isn't anything "view"-related about it. Take a screenshot at 4:3 with your FOV, then take one at 10:16. You can see the same amount on the left and right and the forward distance still remains, you're just chopped off on the top and bottom essentially. In order to maintain the same view as before (ie you can see >= the same view as your lower aspect ratio) you'd have to increase the FOV (of course this would indeed change your perception of the world though, as per the rest of my post).

fov 100 is better, but I like 90 for objects appearing larger, and aim, so I'll stick with it

I play with a higher fov (120) because it lets me see more of the map, which I think improves my movement since it allows for me to judge distance better. I think though playing with a lower fov would be better for railgun (esp for pixel shots). A higher fov for chaingun I think works out better, since that weapon's spray pattern is sorta big and not that precise, and the less distance you have to travel to keep your lead on a target is a plus. All of this could be avoid though if one of the popular Q2 clients had a zoom feature. Zoom alias doesn't work too well with the chat flood protection, I'd say. I like to spam on the zoom command in other games.

guess i must have miss-read your first post, sounded like you were saying fov and aspect ratio are unrelated :)

thats why i said i disagree, when doing research from switching to crt to widescreen and when i got my laptop which is 16:9 instead of 16:10 i found out all the differences... i cant remember exact numbers, but a 16:9 is 6 fov higher than a 16:10 i think... and a 16:10 is like 10 higher than a 4:3... its easy enough to find with a google search if you ever need it :)

I have always been under the impression that chaingun is most affected by fov out of all the weapons. As in... a lower fov is easier than a high one. The spray pattern is sort of big and not that precise, yes... but nonetheless, aren't the most bullets connecting when you hold the crosshair as close to the center of the skin as possible(assuming distance is constant)? It is just very hard for me to believe that tracking your opponent(staying as close to the center as possible while both of you are moving) with cg is more tough with a visibly larger target. Pretty sure it's as simple as that, but maybe I'm missing something :?: How large is your monitor, barton?

When I say movement, just to clarify; It hardly includes jumps. It means any possible way I can move to give me the upper-hand. The largest category that comes to mind is combining movement and aim(movement is only useful if it actually gives you the upper hand in something, like a shot or an item).

My monitor is 1920 x 1080 but I play in 1024 x 720. ~21.53cm/360 for my sensitivity last time I checked.

Right right, it wasn't chat flood protection as I don't remember Q2 admin kicking me for that reason with this zoom alias. Definitely though, I was kicked for spamming this alias on the TS servers years ago. Here's the alias I was using: http://tastyspleen.net/quake/forums/index.php?topic=7.msg117659#msg117659

the kick was probably for too many userinfo changes in a short period of time.

skin, handedness, fov, sensitivity and such can only be changed so often before the server will kick you for spamming changes.

I play on a 15 inch laptop screen with fov 90. But really after playing with this for so long, it's really comfortable.  I think haunted is another player that is making use of the legacy human technology : ).
