I still get a black screen on 10.6.8.
Video issue. sound etc works ok, I just see nothing.

Weird! Can you start it from the terminal and get some console output for me? Also have you tried windowed mode?

In windowed mode it works fine. But really isn't that fun. You aren't really "in" the game then.

but not in full screen.
in console I get these message:

Opening it in terminal "open -a /Applications/Quake\ II.app" just opens the app the same way as double clicking. nothing else is displayed in the terminal

Is 1280x960 your actual full screen resolution? Try editing your config (~/.quake2/baseq2/config.cfg) and setting gl_mode to 3, or try setting r_custom_width and r_custom_height and then gl_mode -1.

I don't think this is a problem in Quake2, I think maybe libSDL and your video driver don't get along. You have the same problem with Quake2World, right? It's strange.. this code works fine on every other Mac, Linux and Windows, on every AMD, NVidia, or Intel chipset I've tested. It's just your machine that doesn't work at all.

My real resolution is 1680/1050.
Setting gl_mode "3" and r_customwidth and r_customheight is the same problem.
If I put my display resolution to 1280/960 it is the same problem. (so resolution isn't the prob)
Indeed, Quake2world has the same problem when I try fullscreen it goes black.

I've read on http://portingteam.com/frontpage
that some of these Wine wrappers have the same problem with ATI cards, which they eventually solve bringing out a new wrapper.

So is it because I have an ATI/AMD card?

I guess I'll have to upgrade to 10.7?

Hm. I was not explicitly requesting SDL_DOUBLEBUFFER from SDL_SetVideoMode, which, according to http://lists.libsdl.org/pipermail/sdl-libsdl.org/2006-May/055877.html might be a problem. Try dropping this binary into

I downloaded the binary, named it aq2 like the old one, made it+x. Put it in the MacOS folder.
But when i run I get an error Quake II cannot be opened because of a problem
Under you find the whole error message "details"

I upgraded to 10.7. Now it works fine in full screen.
It must've been a driver issue. It's so wrong Apple nor ATI/AMD release updated drivers for their "old" OS. (10.6 is what, 2 years old).

Finally I can play Quake II with high res textures , fast downloading,...
