Hola!

You can download DemoPlay 2.4 here: http://www.fusters.org/quake-2-files

(Bottom of the page, Qtils section.)

Note, though, as far as I know, nobody has had any luck getting that to work on Windows 7 64-bit OS.

Of course, you can also play the .dm2 from within Q2 without any extra program needed.  (in the console: demomap file.dm2)

Thanks all for the warm welcome....I've downloaded the .zip file for the player..it extracts fine..but the setup process reaches 100% and gets stuck. I've let it sit for 10 min...still nothing. I'm using Vista 32 bit. I ran the setup as Admin. Does anyone have the player .exe file and any associated files they could upload here that I can copy directly to my pc without needing to go through the setup process?

Thanks in advance.

If you have big problems with that application, you can set it up yourself without a demo player program.

1. write a batch script

For example for *.bsp or *.dm2 files

write a batch file to copy it then play ("C:\Program Files\quake2\r1q2.exe" +map %~n1 +set cheats 1") it.  Similar example for *.dm2 files.

2.  Tell windows to run programs with extension *.bsp with your batch file by selecting a file of *.bsp, right mouse menu, open with,..

3. I like to play without custom models; but, I like to watch demos with all the eye candy on.  This is easy to do by having a full q2kicker install for demo playback.

Then anytime you see a *.dm2 or *.bsp you just double click it to play/see it.

That seems like a good solution.

I just tried to get DemoPlay working on Windows 7, and, "almost" got it working after the following steps:

Install visual basic 5.0 runtime: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/180071

Manually install two missing OCX files:

http://www.ascentive.com/support/new/support_dll.phtml?dllname=TABCTL32.OCX
http://www.ascentive.com/support/new/support_dll.phtml?dllname=COMDLG32.OCX

I installed these from the DemoPlay app folder so as not to further clutter system32 (sysWOW64).

After that, DemoPlay 2.4 actually runs.  In that, it brings up the usual interfaces and I can configure the path to Quake2.

HOWEVER, after associating .dm2 files with demoplay.exe, I double-click on a demo file, it loads DemoPlay... but then it says:

Demoplay: Cannot detect demo type. This does not appear to be a valid demo file.

I've tried configuring demoplay.exe to run as Administrator, and also in "XP Service Pack 3 compatibility mode" and whatnot, but, no luck.

. . . So yeah, I think Defiant's solution is the way to go.

I'd love to try that solution Defiant...but you'll have to hold my hand a bit more on writing a batch file to do that. Can I convince you to post a step-by-step for me? Sorry...I'm a noob at the software side of things.

Easy way to play a demo by double clicking any filename.dm2 demo file...   Just perform these three steps once.

1. open notepad, paste this in:
Code: [Select]
copy %1 "C:\Program Files\quake2\baseq2\demos"
"C:\Program Files\quake2\r1q2.exe" +demomap %~n1.dm2
Notepad menu -> Save As
C:\Program Files\quake2\run_demo.bat

2. move a demo file from your C:\Program Files\quake2\demos directory to your desktop

3. Left click the demo file on the desktop then right mouse click on it --> OpenWith --> ChooseProgram..
In the Open With window, click Browse
Pick C:\Program Files\quake2\run_demo.bat
click the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file"
click ok

The script should then copy the file over, launch q2 and play the demo.

Problems?
Your location of quake2 might be in d:\games\q2 or something.. just change the file locations to match
You may use a different game than r1q2, just modify the instructions to use that executable rather than r1q2
