I may be mistaken, but I think a mouse connected through the ps/2 port will allow you to change reports/sec natively in the windows mouse settings, but one connected via USB will not and will have a much higher polling rate than you could get with a ps/2 connection. I think I remember someone posting a little program that will allow you to change the polling rate to something much higher, but it's a little risky as it could damage your computer.

Like I said, your best option is to get a basic and cheap Logitech LS-1 corded laser mouse. Laser is better than optical because it doesn't get optical interference/feedback when you use it on a laminate desk surface, and most desk surfaces will be laminated or covered with a slightly reflective glossy clear coat to make the desk look shiny and protect the wood.

Some people might swear that these expensive gaming mouses are much better, but in reality, they offer only negligible advantages over a basic one. Probably the biggest advantage would be the extra programmable buttons on them, but that isn't really necessary and could only serve to get in the way. If you have the cash to spend on them, why not, but in my opinion, it's not worth the 80 bucks or more that they probably run these days.

lol default ps2 runs at 100mhz i think... and default usb runs at 125mhz i believe... so... not that much of a difference, however usb is CAPABLE of going much higher, for instance my deathadder does 1ghz by default

mostly with expensive mice you are paying for a high quality sensor, more buttons, and a nice look/shape/feel

my deathadder on my xtrac pad is smooth as butter, the two side buttons are useful and i use both of them a lot, the sensor is second to none and can track at speeds faster than its possible for a human arm to move, and i just love its look and feel plus a deathadder only runs 50$... however newer ones seem to be having button problems in some of them, mx518 is still like 30-40$ and a great choice.... the biggest thing i notice whenever i go to a cheap mouse, its not as smooth the buttons arent as nice... and if i flick my wrist with a cheap mouse i get negative acceleration losing complete tracking cause of the speed

i noticed mouse lag as well for a long time, when moving my mouse slowly. then i figured out the wonders of m_look and m_directinput
they cancel out the effects of that silly windows mouse acceleration crap, which makes your mouse move faster than your hand, the faster you move your hand (wrap your noggin around that).
might fix it, if you arent using those already.
