Quake 2 problems

Hello, I just downloaded quake II from Tasty Spleen, and I've noticed some problems while playing online.  First of all the mouse seems to have acceleration on or something of the sort, even with m_accel at 0.  The aiming feels very different than Q3, QL, CS, basically every other game I have played.  Furthermore I have noticed that the netcode is pretty funky, I have to lead shots with my railgun, and the guns seem to have a delay on firing.  It feels very unnatural compared to other quake games.  I've also had a problem with the weapons sometimes just constantly firing and I have to press mouse1 again for the to stop, this may seem like a mouse problem but it happens with different mice, and I have never had the problem in any other game.

Is this just something that is part of Q2 and I should just get used to it?  Or do you think there is a fix.

Thanks for your help,  I really want to play Q2 I'm just having a rough time enjoying it with these problems.

Edit: By the way all quake games are 75 percent off on steam. Figure I would throw that out there.

If you're running Quake 2, version 3.20, on Windows XP you will have some issues to sort through. Try another client like R1Q2 as it has many tweaks and commands to cure most of that.

IMO my Quake 2 played best with Win98 but that's because the game was developed within that OS (and Win95) at the time.

Hi, what OS are you runing? (WindowsXP has mouse accel, but newer Q2clients like r1q2 or aprq2 have a command to disable that. Might be worth to try)

Yes there is a big difference. If you're used to the other quake games then it might feel unnatural to you but there's nothing "unnatural" about the railgun in Q2, in fact the railgun originates from Q2:). So this is one the things you should just get used to.

Ehm, no. There must be something else going on. Check your binds and controls first, maybe you have accidentally bound +attack to the mouse1 and some other key that gets pressed.
Does this only happen during online play or also when you're playing offline? If only online it could be lag. You can test this by starting Q2 and load up a map youself, eg. map q2dm2

idk what to tell ya on that note :) its probably most likely operating system, just make sure you disable mouse accel via your os with cpl mouse fix for xp or one of those nifty programs for vista/7

the netcode isnt unlagged, if you have 60ms ping you have to aim 60ms ahead, it happens for everyone so its not a disadvantage, it does make it harder to aim and it does take some getting used to, but once you finally get used to it youll find out it is actually a better system :) if a rail slug goes through a model, it WILL do damage, the quake2 netcode is significantly less glitchy than the unlagged code of q3/ql/q4

this could be packet loss, the server recieves the frame for +attack but it doesnt recieve the frame for -attack due to a dropped packet, it happens to me often in quake4 and some times quakelive, you just have to hit the key again to toggle the + and - again :) try checking your netgraph to make sure you dont have any packet loss, it doesnt always show up but im pretty sure thats what the problem is
