new Linux server
« on: August 08, 2010, 09:51:30 PM »
Just got myself a Linux server, so I"m pretty happy  :P

So far I installed a proxy and set SSH to tunnel the browser requests.  I put an addon in firefox to switch proxies with a drop down.  For the SSH connection I used public key authenication so I don't have to login.  I put a shortcut to putty (and xming) in startup and that shortcut calls an existsing putty session that uses the private key to authenicate against the public key.  This way I'll have a terminal to the server without doing anything.  Also running nxserver and xming.  These are x-windows servers, so I can type a program and the x-windows server displays it on Windows machine.  It's pretty nice for board games and what not.

I got the machine to run some assemblers, and start messing with stuff after I got "the shell coders handbook".  Intel 32bit architecture makes no real distinction between instructions and data, so if you feed it instructions, when it when it should be seeing data, you can take control of the execution - so the book says : ).

Anyways not bad for 5 bucks!
I have 64MB of RAM, and a 512MB swap file, and no support at all :).  What does the Q2 servers use up for resources?  I may upgrade the plan and run an NYgang style server : ).

btw I went with ubuntu server, personally I think aptitudes (apt-get instsall useful stuff ) is just to much to pass up.  I guess debian would be fine, but more people using ubuntu means more support.

I don't worship the devil. Jesus is Lord, friend. He died for your sins. He will forgive you if you just ask.
