Why do you do it, quadz?

You spend a significant amount of your time, and at ~$690 a month for server costs, a pretty hefty chunk (by most people's standards) of your own money to keep these servers up.  I can only assume that the majority of the people who benefit from your efforts do so without any personal expense.  On the graph page that shows the server maintenance costs along with paypal donations, you say that you will keep these servers up as long as you stay employed.

First off, these questions come from a place of admiration and total appreciation.  So, why do you do it?  I presume Quake 2 is as much of a hobby for you as it is for the majority of the players that have been playing here for these many years.  Does it ever feel like an obligation; insomuch as if the tastyspleen servers suddenly disappeared, the options for online Quake 2 gaming would be severely crippled, especially here in the US, anyway.

My interest in this game has had many peaks and valleys over the ~11 or so years I've been playing.  Whenever my interest in this game takes an upturn, it's great to know that there's a community like tastyspleen that's still going strong and with an excellent support system that I can easily jump right back into.

I haven't even played at all lately, but was just feeling very thankful for your efforts, quadz, and all the other people who do their part in making this such a great home for a ~13 year old game that's just too good to forget about

I think he feels good about spending the money to keep them up, as someone typically would while doing something to benefit others(in regard to the initial question).

He's so lenient with behavior on these forums/servers, too. Sometimes his abundance of fairness may seem to bite him in the ass later, but more than anything I think he's rewarded by this; on occasion, how I handle myself is a direct effect of how quadz handles himself/runs this community. As someone who has also made several errors as an admin for a few of ts's servers....as long as I don't try to lay some bullshit on him afterward he's always really understanding, which is more than I could ask for

700 bucks a month to keep the servers running because you want a place with a large pool of players to play a game you love. While that might seem like something a person with an "addiction" might do... I can still call it reasonable for 2 reasons:
1. It isn't physically unhealthy like heroin addiction.
2. 700 a month isn't nearly as bad as a heroin addiction that might cost a person 700 a WEEK. 

I can't really understand how someone could be that selfless. I know I'm not the type to put myself out for strangers, especially to the tune of 700 a month. That's almost one months house payment. You must be fuckin' LOADED or you really really love Q2.

I can't offer anything other than a sincere Thank You. Indeed, thank you.

But I can promise that if I ever decide to meet up with the spleeners at QuakeCon one of these years, I will personally pay for every last drop of every drink that you can manage to stay conscious for and swill down, even if I have to stay dry to be able to afford it.

Damn, for the longest time I can remember I dreamt of playing quake 2 multiplayer ever since I bought this game almost 7 years ago. I couldn't find any servers. I was certain for the longest time that no one played quake 2 anymore. I barely started using the internet again that year in 2003. And I wished for the longest time that there would be online servers running. When I found tastyspleen, I couldn't believe it! Now, I take it for granted. Even after all this time, I still consider quake 2 my favorite game. You're like  Anyway, thanks a lot quadz!

Ditto. I was playing Quake2 here and there on Mplayer back in high school and probably in college until Mplayer went down. After that, I think I played it a handful of times on Gamespy. Like I said, just a handful of times, because it seemed like the only servers they had were crazy mods that I didn't understand at the time. I was just looking for some plain-jane DM. So I all but forgot about Quake2. Then a few years ago I finally got DSL and thought back to when I was playing Q2 on Mplayer and wishing that I had DSL to make the game run faster. So I got to looking around on yahoo for "Quake2 server list" and found some site that had a few Q2 servers. It lead me here. This is probably the only game I play online except for poker.
