Anyone with experience know what kind of gun these guys are shooting?  Never seen people take kickback like that.

like 50 cal bullets i'd assume but..... the knockback looks kind of weird to me man. I don't see it happening to me exactly like that if I were to shoot the thing. Some of the guys were barely even holding that thing and some of it looked a lil theatrical. Just in my drunk not too experienced with guns opinion though. I have an old 38 special s&w and a shotgun I play around with from time to time, nothing like that.

Makes sense to me. The barrel looks way too large to be anything in the usual .30 or .40 cal range. At first I thought it was something like an old Mauser with a custom bore to spin the bullet harder. Honestly, it doesn't look like they are really all that inexperienced at shooting, they are holding it properly. After reading a bit about the round itself... I doubt ANYONE could hold that sumbitch level when firing it. You'd probably need a lead sled anchored into a table and a table anchored into the floor to keep that shit from moving. The casing alone is nearly 3 inches long. According to this page on wiki, it travels only slightly slower than any other usual hunting rifle cartridge. Also, according the page, this WAS in fact designed to be used a normal hunting rifle cartridge, which is just fucking insane to me. You'd be a lot better off using a .50 cal round ball or maxi-ball muzzleloader for hunting big game. The last thing you want to do is be flung on your ass with a broken shoulder after possibly MISSING an elephant or a lion.

Such a huge projectile really isn't necessary for hunting big game. I've seen guys hunt bear, elk and lions with compound bows and crossbows before. As long as you place the shot well in the lungs or heart and miss the shoulder bones, a normal .30-06, .308, or broadhead arrow should do the job just fine. I'm not so sure about elephants though. I always thought people traditionally used 8ga shotguns with slugs for those.

Good eyes Focalor, wish I would of done the smart thing like read the feedback on the site    I'm supprised as fuck noone broke their collar bone doing that, what crazy kickback....I wish I could see them shoot a blaistics gel dummy with it, wanna see the aftermatch of a bullet that size hitting a fleshy object.

I don't know jack shit about the gun their using, but the barrel looks awfully short, and that could have a lot to do with the recoil. With a shorter barrel, you'll typically have more turns in the riflings to spin the bullet faster to make it more accurate in order to compensate for the shorter muzzle. Like todays standard for US military rifles is the M4 carbine, which has a lot of commonality with the old M16's they used in the Vietnam era. The M16 was pretty accurate and had a longer range, but the barrel length isn't totally ideal for todays urban combat. A longer barrel makes it harder to maneuver and pie off around corners.

I've seen people shoot .50 caliber Desert Eagle semi-auto handguns, and they are a bitch to control too. There are DEFINITELY better ways to make a .577 caliber rifle that wouldn't be as hard to handle. Designing it with a longer barrel for starters. Perhaps you could actually chamber it back more towards the butt to balance out the length better. A spring recoil absorbing stock like some of the m4 sopmod's or a spring recoil absorbing barrel and bolt like the Barret m82 sniper rifles. I still don't think it would be necessary to use a .577 caliber bullet for hunting anything other than maybe elephants. Chances are, you'll be closer than 50 yards to the animal. More and more people are using AR platform rifles for hunting these days, which would be excellent for hunting the more dangerous big game at close range. With a fast reloading magazine and a decent number of rounds per magazine too, you could throw off plenty of rounds at anything that might start charging at you on rare occasion. You might ruin the trophy you're hoping to mount on the wall, but it's better than being gored to death.

It would depend on the bullet itself as to how much damage it would do. A soild point is probably just going to rip a straight or slightly curved clean hole right through something unless it hits a particularly large and dense bone. A soft point is going to mushroom out to probably twice the original diameter and then kind of tumble as it passes through soft tissue, ripping a jagged and wide hole that would bleed out a lot more. Being that it isn't totally hollow point, it might fragment a little bit as well, but not too terribly much. It would still pass completely through a human almost without exception. That particular round has SHITLOADS of energy. Eye and ear protection are a must. The burst from the end of the muzzle could possibly blind someone without safety glasses.
