"Black Hole" Server/map bug. What is it, what causes it?

Occasionally while in a FFA game, I've noticed that certain spots on a map become sort of a "Black Hole" of sorts.  You can't see these spots, but when you get close to them, you usually hear a railgun hum, and they stick you, or sort of make it feel laggy, just when passing through these particular spots.

Is anybody else familiar with this anomaly that I'm referring to?  What causes this exactly?

No one has ever noticed this?  Maybe I'm not describing it effectively enough.  There's often the sound of a railgun hum (at least with defaults sounds), and there's a lag/wobble when you run through it.  It's pretty rare, but I've definitely noticed it a number of times since I've been playing.

yeah i noticed that too in vanilla. on certain maps ( forgot) when you pass by some areas youll be bumped and there are some sounds that occur too.
Probably ghosts.. To think how many had died in that area.

Its a glitch.


I picture it as a player who left,  and leaves a "ghost" behind.
Why the ghost always has rail I dunno. 

Feels more like a magnet with the same pole, 
you can almost touch it but it pushes you aside at the last minute.

Another player has a thread about them, but he describes them as lag spots.

They are quirky,  I like finding them and using the sound to identify the exact spot it is on.
Have a demo somewhere...

What causes it?  I have no clue.  Don't think I have come across it on a tourney server though.
But that might just be because they don't have the same amount of traffic.

If a player dies in a violent manner his spirit wont leave thus manifests its presence in the form of a ghost.

ex. shot in the back, blown up by a grenade, exploded by a rocket etc.

yeah,  but I would think a player bounding box would be something you could walk into and "lean" against...

The only reason I come up with the bounding box idea is because when I'm making models for Q2, if I have the bounding box wrong in the code then the player reacts funny to it.  Not just being stopped, but it acts like lag, bouncing me around while I'm trying to move.

So I highly doubt it's a player's bbox straight up, I'd figure it's it's changed somehow (not on the ground, in the ground, partly in wall, etc).  Or could be a dropped weapon bbox that's solid (or something similar).
