Tourney4 mating with railztdm

Hi,

Ive been back a bit for about a week, and noticed some choppyness and lag on the irtdm and railztdm server. I dunno if its because i never noticed before, but on my part it seems very laggy and not too good for a rail server.

I then go on tourney4 and notice how the people's pings are much better, and how this t4 server is really smooth. Most of the people I see on t4 have lower pings than on tourney, so i guess it would be the same for a major part of the community?

That being said, is there a reason there is such a difference between irtdm+railztdm and tourney4? And could we change it so that it is optimize for a rail server? (if its only me that has this issue, ignore this hehe)

The reason you see better pings on t4 for most of the players there is that a lot of the players who use that server are on the east coast of the US and the t4 server is physically in New Jersey. They choose to play there as opposed to on Tourney, so they get those 20 and 30 pings instead of 50s. Afaik, the T4 box only has jump and a few tdm servers on it.

The railztdm, nail, and irtdm servers are on the same machine in Texas. They run the osp tourney mod as opposed to the opentdm mod that r1ch made, but that won't change your ping or the smoothness in any noticeable amount. It's the exact same mod that was run on MK.

The "lag" could either be a product of bad routing over longer distance or the fact that most of the TS servers are on the same box in Texas and when the FFA servers load up, they may be eating a large chunk of the bandwidth and processing power.


If it helps, I'm pretty sure you can vote an instagib configuration on the t4 servers using the in-game voting menu.
I don't think there's a way to add nades in opentdm instagib, but some people don't like them in insta anyway.

If we can vote instagib on the T4 server it would be great.

In comparaison from t4 rail delay to irtdm or railztdm, heres a small graph of how it feels for me ( | bar = delay of rail after clicking the trigger)

Heh, yesterday night I was pinging 280-300 to IRTDM and RAILZ. Bud was like "What the hell?" After awhile, it dropped back to 55 ping, and I performed a lot worse than I had been because I had gotten used to leading people!

On the busiest days, the CPU has still shown about 80% idle.  (Aside from once in awhile when a q3 server hangs in a loop and starts grabbing 100% CPU on one core. But even then it hasn't seemed to cause lag in-game on the other servers on the box.)

Bandwidth looks OK, averaging about 6 Mbps out the port during peak times, although there are occasional spikes up to 12 Mbps, and more rarely (once a week or so) up to 20 or 30 Mbps, presumably when several concurrent file downloads are underway.

My in-game experience on the FFA servers is still very smooth--netgraph is a flat green line--but I have noticed in the last few weeks an occasional lag spike, maybe once every 2 to 5 minutes.  I have no idea yet whether these lag spikes are occurring on my local machine, or somewhere along the route, or on the server itself.  I'll have to start asking other players if they lagged at the same time I did.

But other than those occasional unexplained spikes, gameplay has remained smooth and even for me on the TX box.  (Especially considering the packets are making a 2700 mile round trip.)


As for the tourney4 box, it's a small VPS and pretty much at its bandwidth limits.  There's no room to add a potentially high-traffic server to that box.
