Quake2 to display something other than default opengl
«
on:

I used to have a graphics card that allowed 3dfx gl, but my new card will only render "default opengl" or software mode.
Often when playing I cannot even see players before they start to shoot because they blend into the background so much.
I'll rewatch a demo on another computer and see that I walked right passed players.
Anyone have some suggestions on how to fix this problem?
Thanks in advance.

depending on what you are using for a client and renderer, a brightskin pak may help you.
If you are using r1q2 and r1gl, a high res set of skins are available that will show up much better than the almost camoflauged stock skins. You'd unzip the following file into your c:\quake2\baseq2 folder:
http://ir.tastyspleen.net/files/brightskinpak.zip
There are also slightly brighter skins included that will work with the original quake 2 v3.20 if you're still using that client.
Upping the overall game brightness by adjusting the vid_gamma and gl_modulate settings may help too.

Sorry, I guess I wasn't very clear.
I need to change/modify the renderer somehow... and this is for quake2 (not r1q2 or any other bastardization of the real game).
thanks for the input though.

unless you have a voodoo card, you can't change it to anything other than opengl or software mode.
3dfx isn't supported by any cards now.
set vid_ref gl
or
set vid_ref soft
in your config or console.

correct, otherwise q2 wouldn't work when I run the stock exe.
Reported vid_ref r1gl

Thanks, that was just the answer I was looking for.
It does appear to be slightly clearer, but it seems a lot more choppy... like digital from analog.
not sure which I'll stick with, but it is nice to have a choice.

Voodoo cards rendered the game the best in my humble opinion. But you can get close with OpenGL Nividia cards if you experiment with different vid_gamma, gl_modulate, intensity and a host of r1gl specific commands.
