r1q2 issues
« on: September 28, 2005, 12:51:24 AM »
My autoexec.cfg contains this line:

exec ../configs/blah.cfg

This is what nocheat does:

exec c:/quake2/configs/blah.cfg

... meaning, the client looks for the /configs folder in the /quake2 directory, which is perfect because that's what I'm telling it to do.

R1Q2 tries to do this:

exec ./baseq2/../configs/blah.cfg

Anyone know if I can get it to look UP a directory?  I'll have to move some stuff if otherwise :-/

In the autoexec.cfg take out the ../

so instead of this:
exec ../configs/blah.cfg

use this:
exec configs/blah.cfg

R1q2 uses my additonal .cfg and .txt files so it seems to work

Hmmm... still not working, and I even moved my config folder inside the baseq2 directory (and changed the locations in my configs as well) to see if that would change anything.  I'm getting a fatal error when I try to exec a config.  It says:
Couldn't open ./baseq2/configs/(cached)
Press Retry to cause a debug breakpoint

Thanks for the help, Pan - anyone have ideas about what is causing this?

Pan,

My config structure is kind of complicated to explain.  I have several "global" configs - for team dm, ffa, and ctf.  Each of these is only a list of other configs that are executed.  These are located in this directory:  C:/quake2/configs/global/

My autoexec.cfg is:
exec ../configs/global/global-(ffa or teamdm or ctf).cfg

global-ffa.cfg:
exec ../configs/universal.cfg
exec ../configs/ffa.cfg

global-teamdm.cfg:
exec ../configs/universal.cfg
exec ../configs/positions.cfg
exec ../configs/maps/$mapname.cfg
exec ../configs/team.cfg

It's useful to keep all of these in a seperate cfg from the autoexec because I might want to test my team dm settings while in ffa and i won't have to type out all the seperate configs' names, i just type out "exec ../configs/global/global-teamdm.cfg" (and I really don't even do that... I have an alias which does that for me).

Anyways, long story short, this setup works fine in nocheat, and I'm not sure why it doesn't work in r1q2.  I'll set up a much simpler autoexec.cfg file and see if it executes correctly and experiment from there.  Typing in console didn't change any of the results.

More information will follow - if you'd REALLY like me to upload my configs I will  ;)

Thanks for the help :)

 . . .

Senor Crazed,

As much as I like r1q2 (and continue to use it), I have had nothing but dismal luck getting it to accept any path with a ".." in it anywhere.

I admit I understand the motivation behind the restriction - It used to be possible to get the old-skool id q2 clients to wigg out (even crash your comp, if you were win9x OS) by specifying various playerinfo with paths with a ".." in it.

So I guess r1ch just said, in the name of stamping out all potential "../" exploits, r1q2 will overarchingly reject any path with a ".." in it.

I personally wish some "../" paths were still allowed... -- and it sounds like, if you're in the same boat, you might wish similarly.  But the trade-off is a more secure client that can't be so easily exploited by others on the server.  . . . So there are trade-offs...

I'd bet you can still get your configs working in a structure that's r1q2-compatible... Just avoid the "../" paths.

Hope this helps,

Regards,

:blunt:

Console, Pan,

I think I located the problem.  I have a few lines in my configs where I try to execute a variable filename.  When I remove these lines my configs execute correctly.  I'm a little confused about why though...

This is one of the offending lines:

exec configs/maps/$mapname.cfg

R1Q2 doesn't seem to allow you to execute variables.  Is that possible?  It kind of throws a wrench in my config setup - I'd hate to have to manually exec my individual map configs because I'd rarely remember to do it...  :-\

Your Humble Servant,
the Crazed
