Perhaps a commentary on music these days, and what passes for entertainment as well.

This is news? It's taken someone reputable THIS long to say this? I remember when the first season of American Idol was on. I remember thinking to myself, "They searched far and wide... and THIS bullshit is the best they could find?" Indeed, it's exactly like televised karaoke. The first season wasn't so bad, they had a limited budget and they didn't know how successful the show was going to be, so I think they actually had an honest competition at that time. But these days, that shit is NOT real, it's all staged to grab ratings just like every other "reality" show out there now. It's all scripted, badly might I add. Remember that old show called Star Search hosted by Ed MacMahon? THAT was more talent than American Idol will ever man up to.

I dunno if you mean the OLD episodes are making a comeback... but a year or so ago, Comedy Central did attempt to bring back the Gong Show with host Dave Attell, who is one of the funniest sumbitches ever. I don't think it's going to run a second season, which is too bad. It wasn't one of the greatest shows of all time or anything, but it was a hell of a lot funnier than Mind of Mencia, Chocolate News, or that new pile of crap the Jeff Dunham Show. I'm glad they did decide to keep Tosh.0 around though, one of their better shows and actually pretty cheap to make. As opposed to that Krod Mandoon shite they advertised the piss out of and then it promptly flopped like a limp dick.

Anyways! The new Gong Show isn't strictly a "let's discover talent" kinda show. It's very much scripted, there are never any cutesy 10 year old girls singing Celine Dion or anything like that. It's usually "freakshow" type stuff like what was on Dave Attell's last show, Insomniac. You know, stuff like chicks shooting 8 ping pong balls out of their pussy into box 15 feet away.

Yeah, I hope Jeff Dunham got a crapload of money for doing the show because the exposure and the pressure for new material is going to kill his act for all time. He had some great characters there but he's going to run out of ways to say "Shut up, or I kill you!"

I am reminded of one other who over exposed his standup act.

Yeah, I hope Jeff Dunham got a crapload of money for doing the show because the exposure and the pressure for new material is going to kill his act for all time. He had some great characters there but he's going to run out of ways to say "Shut up, or I kill you!"

I am reminded of one other who over exposed his standup act.

I don't know that continuing a stand up act is the norm anymore. It seems that once a big comedian reaches main stream, they move on from standup.

Tim Allen is probably the best example. Although don't forget that this is not a new trend. The 3 stooges, Abbot & Costello, Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin are all acts that started as stage acts and then moved to the big screen and eventually television. So Jeff Dunham is probably going to phase out his stand up to go on to movies. It's just what happens.

(Take Dane cook. He was funny at standup, he started doing movies, then he became funny in neither  )

I don't see Jeff Dunham having a movie career. I see him maybe having one more season on Comedy Central (kinda like Carlos Mencia) and then not returning for a 3rd season. A movie with Jeff Dunham would end up being as funny as some retarded Larry The Cable Guy movie and would be based solely on the gimmick of his puppets. It's not like anyone would go see a movie starring Jeff Dunham WITHOUT his little gay puppets.

Fuck sting. It shouldn't be taken seriously by those of the viewers that have a brain, and there really can be some sick singers showing up and getting through. It is however, as most people tend to forget, an entertainment show more than a singing contest. Take Stacey Solomon on the recent X factor for example, 90% of em were trash but Stacey had a fucking amazing voice! *still bitter she finished third, over two queers*. It is entertainment, take it as such and the shows become more enjoyable.

I have to say though no offense, American Idol pales in comparison to our british ones presented by people like ant and dec, dermot o'leary.

I think it's because the majority of americans have pretty numb brains. It takes a lot more "suck" to make us go "Wow! That really sucks!" And without the suck, people wouldn't be attracted to it like flies to horseshit like they are. Take a gander at the current music charts in the US. Oh yeah, if ANYONE knows talent, it's gotta be the US.
