I was hit by a bus on a bicycle while riding on the right lane on a two lane road.  Fortunately, though I received no injuries, my bicycle was totally messed up from the shock of the impact, and as i fell on the road, I could see the bus wheels passing by my head which had me fucking scared for days.

Thing is that I've could have been killed or seriously injured, as i was not wearing a bicycle helmet.

For drivers, please watch out for cyclists and motorcyclist, as they have the same right to the road as you do. Cyclists, please wear a helmet, no matter how dorky it'll look, it will save your brains and blood from spilling on the road pavement like mines could have been.

I used to ride my friends motorcycle when I was in high school all the time, and I never wore a helmet. It was a state law in Georgia back then just like it is now. We even got chased by the cops for it once or twice and managed to get away. I remember the time we rode all the way from Atlanta to Chattanooga without helmets, at times doing speeds near 200 mph, whipping in and out between cars, sometimes even riding the dotted line between cars to pass them. And the one time I actually did fall off, I got lucky as hell and was slowed down to maybe 7 mph making a turn into my neighborhood. I hit a patch of gravel near the curb in the middle of the turn at the same time I tried to wrench on the throttle. It shot out from under me like a rocket and I went tumbling across the road to the other curb. I didn't break anything or hit my head, the road just chewed all the meat off my elbows and knees. That was a painful next several months. I got lucky. It took me more than 10 years to work up the courage to ever get back on one again.

A guy in my neighborhood had rode his Roadstar to work that morning. On his way home that evening, someones loose dog in the neighborhood ran out in front of him, causing him to crash into the curb, which sent him over the handlebars and face first into the ground with his feet and body still moving forward. Snapped his neck and he died instantly. Now they have a very strict leash law in the neighborhood covenants.

I would NEVER be caught without a helmet these days. Sometimes we go riding up into South Carolina which isn't very from here. Some of the guys elect to take their helmets off the first chance they get. I do NOT. In my opinion, most motorcycle fatalities are cause by the rider doing something completely stupid. If you remember to drive defensively most of the time, you will usually be able to avoid any potential accident. Unfortunately on motorcycle, what would be a mere a fender-bender in a Honda Accord can equal a violent collision with a low rate of survivability. If you hit a deer in a car, no problem, the seat belt hold you in, the bumper crushes the deer, end of story. On a motorcycle... you go flying and the deer might get up and try to maul you. I had a buddy who hit a deer on a motorcycle one night. Fortunately, he only suffered some scratches, bruises, and a little soreness. Unfortunately, the Buell he was riding home from work belonged to the dealership he worked at and he really didn't have permission to take it. Shit happens.

In my opinion, most motorcycle fatalities are cause by the rider doing something completely stupid.

i wouldn't call that opinion, I'd call it fact.  Includes car accidents too.  Last sunday there were 3 kids & 1 adult (18) killed because they blew through a stop sign north of here & hit a minivan.  Next day someone else blew through the same stop sign & caused another accident.  Stupid drivers caused this (they're saying how horrible it was the kids died but if that kid survived he's be up for murder/manslaughter chargers & there's be no "oh, it's so sad" comments).

I'd say very very very rarely is there a real accident, it's almost always stupid decisions.

From what I've seen, bicycle riders are the worst offenders: they never stop @ lights, never signal turns, assume they have the right of way, etc.  And nothing ever happens.  Never see on the news about riders ticketed/arrested for violating traffic laws...

EDIT: thanks to morons who make the "safe driving" laws, it's still legal for me to enter dates/notes in to my PDA but not use my cellphone while driving.  Heck, it's a tracfone that I only use to order pizza & call AAA: the first my wife does that, the latter I'm already in the ditch.

The one time I did almost see an accident involving a motorcycle that was not the motorcyclists fault, I became enraged. It was some dumb college dork busy playing grab-ass with his airheaded girlfriend in his little Honda Civic with a coffee can muffler. He pulled over into the turn lane the guy was in without even checking his mirror and damn near sideswiped the guy. All my friends were bikers and my girlfriends family was all bikers too, so when it happened, all I thought about was what if that had been someone I knew. When the light changed and we started off, I cut it to the right as hard as I could in hopes of shoving him into the oncoming lane. Unfortunately he slammed on his brakes when he saw me start to cut over and I missed him. After I made it to my girlfriends house and I calmed down, I realized just how stupid that was for me to try that. He would've been smacked from the front and knocked backwards into the guy on the motorcycle. Yeah, I'm not above doing some totally psychotic shit if I get pissed off in the right way. So yeah, see, accidents are caused by people doing stupid shit.

Yeah. It kinda works both ways though. Bicyclists have the right to use all roads with the exception of interstate expressways. A lot of motorists get pissed when they see them and feel they should only ride on the sidewalk... which is dangerous for pedestrians AND bicyclists. Yeah, bicyclists do have a right to use the road. However, some of these cycling twats seem to interpret that as "I have the sole rights to this road." They ride in the middle of the road the entire time, which not only impedes motor traffic, it makes it take longer for the motorist to pass the person and thusly makes passing more dangerous. They sometimes will run red lights or stop signs. Umm. They have the right to SHARE the road, they do not have the right not to obey traffic laws. If these people get hit and mangled beyond recognition in the undercarriage of a Ford Taurus, the world is better off being free of one more stupid person.

My best friend took his Ducatti out for the final ride of the season and I followed in my Mazda 3 (meep meep)ripped around the farm land where he lives. He mentioned a hilly area that leaves you quite blind to what's on the other side, usually intersections. He was going the limit in there and the guy who hooked up with him for the ride blew through a stop sign on his CBR nearly hitting some farmer.

So yeah, see, accidents are caused by people doing stupid shit.

But it wasn't an accident, it was a dumbass's fault!   He (car driver) didn't pay attention.  How come there's no "no sex/foreplay/fondeling while driving law.    But there could be accidents.  Bolts break, potholes, etc.

If these people get hit and mangled beyond recognition in the undercarriage of a Ford Taurus, the world is better off being free of one more stupid person.

wouldn't mind a bike rider under my car.    I checked & New York says anyone on the road (motor vehicle, bike, buggy) all follow the same laws.  Wish someone would call in cyclists... they're pricks.   Apparently, in NYS the bike rider must go to a single file line when there's an automobile wanting to pass.  Never knew that one. 

I read in the paper once that an amish kid was driving his buggy drunk.  Since it's not a motor vehicle they couldn't get him on DWI but they got him on underage drinking.

i think cyclists deserve respect, as they are pedaling which requires no gas and has less emissions other than farts.

Yeah. They've made a positive contribution by using pedal power. I just hate when they decide to get together and shut down traffic for a few hours while they ride en masse(several thousand) through busy streets for some contrived idea that the roads belong to them every last friday of the month or whenever they do it. It's an event that is meant to disrupt. Was on Broadway in Vancouver trying to cross the street from the restaurant to the lot across the street. Well it was packed curb to curb with these fuckwits. So I just started waking when the crosswalk beacon was lit and a few of them fell off their bikes while they shouted at me and my party. I'm all for communal events until it interferes with my rights to enjoy my self and walk where I want as a pedestrian.
