Q2 jumps - Q/A thread

Ask any jump-related question and you will get an answer. General questions, technical skill, physics, etc. etc. it doesn't matter: any question somewhat related to q2 jump will get an answer. I'm not q2's absolute best in this category, but I am kind of recognized for knowing this sort of thing and I'll do my best to give you an answer. Input, comments, and whatever is :thumbsup: .. This is a discussion thread where everyone can both ask and answer questions.

Oh.. I wasn't even thinking about jumpmod atm.

Easiest way is an fps change. I try 26 and 30-33, usually 31 is my first guess.. This way all you do is face perpendicular to the ledge, with the surface of the water at your waist-line(approximately.. it can vary depending on the ledge though), an dj.

If you want to to it in your normal fps it's just a little harder than that.. I use 60-63 regularly, a lot of the time the method I just mentioned, without fps change, will work as well. Same with 120 fps, although not as well. You just have to get used to your fps and the timing of the jump. Harder water jumps require a little trick. I usually do a motion that is similar to that of exiting the water with no pop-up lag(when you exit the water normally, you pop out causing you to be temporarily vulnerable to your opponent..) then djing at an angle while coming out of the water / going up the ledge, during the latter part of this technique in mid-motion. You have a good deal of control on how you exit the water by doing mouse movements to that. If you don't understand what I mean i'll be on later to elaborate...going to class.

I am a very slow player because I tend to play Lithium (I use the hook a whole lot :P ). However, I am trying to improve my skills by being able to do things like double jump to top box over ammo pack, and then jump to light, and then to mega. However, I tend to miss harder double jumps and it is really annoying (like from the waterside off the stairs heading up to the megaroom an landing on that little ledge with the armor shards and health on q2dm1). Is there a way to do it well? Also, how do you jump from the HB to the GL on q2dm1? And how do you double jump from the stairs below the SSG up to the SSG area on q2dm1? I am constantly running into situations where that knowledge and skills would be helpful. The slowness is also what is making it really hard for me to control anything, as everybody else always gets there first and takes the goodies :'( .

The words are quite useless to be honest. The best way is to find a man who can teach you such tricks right on the server. You can even PM me to ask for help.

About water jump: 31 or 66 are the most useful and these fps got the best success rate while doing water jumps. Also there is a big different in cl_async 0/1. For example I never try to do water jumps with cl_async 1 because it decrease the success rate. The common water jumps request 66 fps. Also there are many tricky water jumps where you have to use 100-120 fps to get it easy. But i can't call those "jumps" as a water jump. Because in fact you don't even need do any trick-> just use 120 fps and you are on your way.

I'm not sure how to take those first few sentences. Saying my words are quite useless, saying that my way is wrong, saying that i'm not qualified to show someone, then attempting to steer people away from this thread by saying that you will help them in a private message instead?. uhh...

Anyway apkis, I know you're a euro jump pro, and it truly pains me to tell you this, but you are wrong. I find a way to learn / do ALL water jumps with 60-63 fps and can perform them flawlessly with practice. You have to execute them all differently if you don't change your fps, like me. Don't get me wrong, some are pretty difficult without an fps change and 31 as I said usually works well, but I think your suggestion that there's 'no trick' derives from you binding/changing your fps for these jumps as a rule...being that you don't have to.

Aside from that your input was highly appreciated. :bravo:

The easiest way to do this one, for me, is to wall-strafe it. Just hold forward and strafe while having your crosshair at a slight angle inward along the side of the stairs, and DJ at the appropriate time. Constantly change the direction of your strafe into the wall (circle jump affect except against the wall) to increase your distance, but that isn't necessary to make this jump. Also keep in mind it's easier to do the one on the other side.

Also, how do you jump from the HB to the GL on q2dm1?

Double jump off the hyperblaster ledge while moving up on the lift.

And how do you double jump from the stairs below the SSG up to the SSG area on q2dm1?

Download the demo I attached and put it in baseq2\demos\ . Run quake and type map ssg.dm2 in console. Easiest way is the way done in that, jumping off the 2nd stair and djing off the 4th. If the demo doesn't work you might have to run it in r1q2 or type cl_protocol 34.. I forget.

You badly took my words. I was telling about useless words in general. Yes, you can learn and get the jumps from suggestions but it can take a lot of time.
You shouldn't tell that i am wrong. I just told my settings for jumping. And  as You see I was talking about the success rate. It was just my opinion. I am giving such hints to all nubs who asking help on the server. And with my settings they do "water" jumps quite easily. Talking about "no trick" in some water jumps , just 120 fps, I can even prove how correct i am. And yes, every word i say, i am talking from pro side, i have in mind the fastest way of doing the jumps since nowadays we are fighting for 1st place not by 0.1 sec but 0.01 or even less :) So sometimes the correct fps is very important. But i can assure you told everything correctly. Even many tripple jump can be done with normal 90 fps (not 27/31/34) , just you must know the technique.

Any tips for getting the max amount of distance from small height/"shoebox" double jumps? One example would be q2dm1 backpack crates to YA. I can't seem to get those kinds of jumps down consistently...

At first you must learn strafing or even circling. When you have good enough strafe, you just strafe+double jump and you get where you want :)

Kyper, I think I know what's wrong. If you're learning this one and trying to get the kinks out of your technique, start doing the jump straight on with no circling. Just straight up strafe-dj it (a good strafe dj is enough to make it to YA anyways), then AFTER you jump you can circle during the airtime period for a little more distance. Do this opposed to just walking up to it and circle-strafe-djing it(max distance...), you have to sweetspot it that way on this jump.
