Awesome special effects and some nice moments. But at certain points there were scenes in the movie that felt out of place and unnecessary.

And Top Gear on the BBC ofcourse.

Star Trek (2009) 9/10
I disliked it at first but by the time Leonard Nimoy enters the picture it gets really good. It has plenty of good jokes and nostalgic references from the original series with a good set up to support the need for a remake. I still dislike how they made some of the action way too violent and over-the-top compared to any of the series, but it was only superficial and didn't affect the normal star trek style plot resolution.
So casual star trek fans should feel right at home. I can't speak for the hard core trekkies though.

Speaking as a fan who has watch ST since I was 12 years old I can say the new one looks promising as a new spin on old characters but I found ST-TNG to be the best after the first several episodes once all the actors got used to being in their characters. (The first ep had Picard rather stiff in his role but Stewart loosened up nicely later on.)
The battle scenes were a bit over the top but I think they had a precident with "Generations" which was worse, IMO.
Best line: "I got your ..." (Hopefully not a spoiler.)

Terminator Salvation 7/10
It had decent action and an interesting amount of nostalgia but they tried to base it on a weak plot derived from a corner that they wrote themselves into. They present several main characters as potential targets who if killed would erase and invalidate the original movies. Every Terminator movie is based on a different time travel paradox, but this one was just plain not thought out. (which ended in open heart surgery in the middle of a field with no antiseptics, antibiotics, or sedation)
I like mind numbing actions movies with no plot but when you make a serious attempt at a plot and suck at it, it gets frustrating. Plus no crazy futuristic laser rifles.
Still worth watching but that was my rant.

The Road.
I was stunned that it wasn't destroyed by Hollywood b.s.--they stuck pretty faithfully to the book. In fact, I can't think of anything they soft-pedalled or altered, really, though it's been a couple of years since I read it.
But there's no way that any movie could reproduce the horrific images seared into my mind by the book, so in that respect I found it wanting through no fault of its own.
I actually think people who haven't read the book might enjoy (if that's even the word for such a bleak film) it more than those who have.

District 9 7/10
It's not They Live, it's a lot more like Alien Nation. In fact I called that about 8 months ago and probably said it here once or twice. It was good, cool, had an interesting plot and characters that you can sympathies with. The whole documentary thing was done well and the main character is humorously awkward. So there's a million things going for this movie but it falls short because of one thing. This movie is everything great about video games displayed reasonably well inside of a movie... which is then ruined by caring too much about the plot.
So seeing as the movie is based on videogame based weapons and explosions I have to compare it to the Conduit. It's a good game, the plot isn't about the same thing but there are 2 things that are similar. There are aliens and there are really cool alien weapons. It has a plot but it is negligible based on massive death, explosions, and a disintegration ray that is OH SO FREAKING FUN! So we have a pretty good movie and a pretty good game. Why am I comparing them? Because they both tried to accomplish the same goal. They both are supposed to be action packed and featuring people being blown to bits using awesome weapons; a fantasy world in which you want to be a part of. So District 9 makes me want to use the same weapons in the same world to blow people up. The Conduit lets me do that with BETTER effects. So a movie based mostly on it's special effects is beaten by a Wii game? A pretty good movie that I'd rather play a video game than watch. On the Wii no less? So you see my disapointment. It's pretty good but compared to how it was hyped it's trash. The hype was 99/10, the movie was 7/10. So I have to honestly say that the advertisements and the viral nature of the movie ruined it. I feel like those poor schlums that went to watch Twilight because they thought it was a typical vampire movie.
So District 9 is good but it is
not
an action movie. It's a well made sci-fi movie with some action included. Please keep that in mind when watching.

The Holiday - 8/10, sucker for romcoms, jack black makes anything good. cameron diaz is fit as fuck, and winslet and the other guy were a pleasure to watch. good stuff overall!
The Dark Knight - 6/10, great action scenes I just don't really like Batman things in general, clouding my judgement a bit. plot was decent but hard to follow at times I felt.
about to watch uhmmmm whats it called, Equilibrium.

Inglorious Basterds - 7/10
Did not enjoy. It was okay, and I know what kind of outlandish shit to expect when watching a Tarantino movie, but I don't like the fact that the writer of the screenplay basically butchered history in order to make a script. It had some great parts in it, especially the long scene in basement pub that ends in a quick shootout, but the ending felt like they just ran out of time to tell a story and just threw an ending in there to get the film finished on time.
Public Enemies - 9/10
Another awesomely done Michael Mann movie. Johnny Depp was excellent as always.

Equilibrium takes a lot of flack from haters. I can understand if you don't like it. It is long and humorless like Last Man Standing and your usual Tom Clancy film adaptation. But overall it's a great sci-fi alternative future flick with a lot of needlessly awesome sword fighting.
EDIT:
and yes his underhand katana is a real fighting style that was made flashier for the movies. If anyone here duels with boffers or other practice weapons, give it a try. There are two main theories behind it. Use your arm as a whip and in order to block you can easily brace your weapon on a free limb.
Basic blocks when right hand wielding. To block top right and left, swing sword upwards and place your left hand on the pummel, the remaining force can be absorbed by your forearm if you twist the blade. Downward blocks are difficult but very effective if pulled off. Based on your stance, bend your knee, twist the sword and brace it against your leg. One alternative block is to place your free hand near the tip of the blade and "tip" a swing away from you. Another alternative block is to use the momentum of a normal swing to deflect one aimed at you; the nature of your swing gives you a slight advantage in the way of momentum.
The last basic move is the stab. From the top right and left block you can thrust your sword forward with both hands to create a stab. The advantage is that this stab will be at your maximum range. So if your opponent is in the black zone of your swing they may still be in the red zone of your stab.

I actually loved it. I'm not a massive fan of Christian Bale anyway, but it didn't impact the enjoyment of the film. I liked the concept of the whole thing and found it thoroughly enjoyable. 9/10! (just cuz cbale is in it)

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
7/10
Although not the best work of Terry Gilliam, its still a feast for the eyes. Heath Ledger not dying in the middle of filming wouldn't have made the narritive less confusing or unfocused. I think its a case of trying to explain a dream to someone else and since they have no clue as to your personal symbology the listeners are bound to become confused and lost in it. The effects are enchanting, but too soon snatched away from the viewer. Worth seeing on a big screen, and I wonder just how many more films of his we'll get to experience...

Avatar: 7/10. Good movie but to long. They couldn't seem like they could cut anything from the current film to make it shorter, only a rewrite could do it. But good movie.
Sherlock Holmes: 9/10. Same length as Avatar, but more fun to watch throughout the film.
