The very reason Nintendo didn't say anything about the Wii before it was already figured out. Why make huge hype for something you're not sure you can deliver?

That concept video is pretty unrealistic to say the least.

I'm pretty convinced that this is an empty marketing ploy to sell more consoles (which have been riddled with red ring of death and terrible warranty service. I don't know an XBOX user that hasn't bought at least 1 replacement because their original won't be covered) The actual application of this will probably include a huge hassle to set up the speech recognition that will only recognize one or maybe 2 users at a time, buggy controls, an incredibly limited number of titles using these features, unresponsive controls, no realistic multiplayer support, all which finally ends with the sad realization that using a controller with a standard menu system is easier.

Remember.. this is Microsoft people.

Remember that the wii is the power glove mixed with the NES gun. Not new technologies, just a different application. As with this Project Natal, speech recognition is already a standard feature of windows since 98SE I think. The motion sensors I'm pretty sure that Microsoft has some form of that concept out for their business products. There are all kinds of fancy expensive touch screen, table document scanners, and an array of geeky overpriced tech toys marketed to fortune 500 companies. Remember the last time that you've seen either one used?

My sister has a Wii system for her anti-christs... I mean kids. I was playing that golf thing with my 4 year old nephew the other week. It was kinda amusing, I guess. The graphics for most of the games appear to be rather behind-the-times, in my opinion. I think Wii does have a few games that are better too though, I think Call of Duty: World At War is available for it.

Anyway...

I wasn't impressed with the controllers at all. It was hard as hell to hit the golf ball with just the amount of force you actually WANTED to. The boxing game was hard to figure out too. Seems like it should come with its own manual detailing what position to hold the controllers in order to throw specific punches and combos. I'd rather just play a normal old console with normal pad controllers. But then again, I'm not too impressed with those either. For the types of games I prefer to play, a keyboard and a mouse work perfectly. I guess that's why the last console type pieces of junk I ever owned were the original Nintendo Gameboy "brick", and the old Atari. Nothing beats a PC as far as I'm concerned.

the games included with the wii come with a tutorial mode on how to play. it's amazingly simple once you do that. Years of being on a kb+mouse/controller makes it a necessity to run a tutorial.

my point wasn't that the wii controller was new tech (nintendo was very straightforward that it was nothing new at all, just new in how it was applied), but they didn't even show it until they know what it would/wouldn't do. People speculated on what it would/wouldn't do, but it wasn't shown until it was ready. I'm just saying what MS comes out with could be completely different vs what they're showing. All of nintendo's promos showed exactly what the control can do in reality.

Why should anyone actually expect Microsoft to make anything that does what it's supposed to do? As far as I can tell, they have a great tradition of selling inferior product so that they can make even MORE money selling you solutions to THEIR fuck-ups.

But in the 9+ years that speech recognition has been available as a standard option on windows, have you ever used it? They have a decade long track record of providing a useless feature. How is it now all of the sudden going to be revolutionary?
