I've played around on a 7 string guitar a few times. I can understand the usefulness of an extra lower string on a 7 string guitar, but it's not something I'd wanna play on as my main guitar. The neck width takes some getting used to, and it's not as comfortable and effortless to play on as a 6 string. But I've also tried to play some of these newer 8 and 9 string guitars I've occasionally seen sitting around at Guitar Center... no way. Not happening. The fretboard is WAY too wide to play comfortably. Best of luck to you yo-yo's who wanna drop the money on one of those things. Count me out.

Everybody made such a big deal about Angus Young,... and for good reason. You look at performances back before Bon Scott died, and Angus Young was running all over the place, jumping off amplifier cabinets and stage monitors and drum risers, sweat pouring out of him like a faucet, flailing around like an electrocuted headless chicken, and still playing his Gibson SG like a fucking ninja blues master. But it was Malcolm's Gretsch Firebird with those very distinctive filtertron pickups that gave the AC/DC sound their driving electric power that made the songs memorable and catchy.

At one point, Gretsch guitars were making a limited run Malcolm Young signature model, which was a remake of an old 60's Firebird complete with his "customized" empty neck and middle position humbucker route holes. (At some point in the 80's he began experimenting with different pickups and positionings before going back to a plain single bridge filtertron humbucker sound for everything like he did when ACDC started. He always claimed the empty custom routed holes made the guitar sound BETTER and more resonant than before.) It was what you could certainly call "expensive as FUCK", more expensive than most custom Gibson Les Paul custom shop models you'll ever see. God only knows what those things will be worth now.

You can "kinda" get the same guitar still in the Gretsch Electromatic Double Jet model, although with it being one of the "Electromatic" Chinese made models, the bridge and tailpiece won't be the same design. Even though they're chinese, they're still very well made and worth the money.

edit: Nope. Turns out it's actually made in Japan. And these days... apparently... people consider Japanese made guitars to be automatically on par quality-wise with American made guitars.

I'd say drugs. Old age? Eh, probably not. If I recall correctly, back in the Cranberries' peak period, the band used their fame to draw attention to the ongoing struggle for Irish independence, which technically is OVER now (some still say it isn't). But I don't think anyone would want to kill her over that kinda thing NOW.
