R1Q2 Single Play

I've always had problems getting R1Q2 to run any Single Play Quake2 mod. In Quake 3.20 I just use "set game xatrix" for example and it says the game will start next map. I then put in the appropriate mod map and off it goes. With R1Q2 if I put in the game command it says the game is "write protected" and ignores the command. If I just start the map I might get it but sometimes all the textures are missing. And the map will be devoid of enemies. No problems in multi-play with R1Q2.
Am I using the wrong commands?

you may have to run the mod as a command line option when starting r1q2..

When I run gladiator bots using the osp tourney config frontend, it actually starts q2 using an extended command line and custom server config to make sure the right mod directory is being used and the right game type is defined.

like this :

c:\quake2\\quake2.exe +set game tourney +set basedir "c:\quake2\" +exec 1v1.cfg


you might want to tell it the correct base directory along with the game type to insure that it's running single player mode from your baseq2 or mod directory..

Running the mod with a command line will work, but from what I know you only get that "game is write protected" message when you're trying to switch mods while being in a game.  What I usually just do is type disconnect first so that I'm thrown back into the console and then I can use the "set game xxxx" or "game xxxx" command to switch mods with no problem.  To run a Singleplay mod you better also add deathmatch 0 because r1q2 defaults to deathmatch mode:

"disconnect"
"set game xatrix;deathmatch 0"

Yes, due to how the game cvar is used, changing it mid-game is dangerous and can result in crashes and other unpleasant things. R1Q2 also defaults to deathmatch 1, which removes any single player enemies. Just do what PNJ suggested and you'll be fine.

So I got it to work - sort of. When it started, there were many monsters missing, particularly all the new ones (bulldog etc). So I checked thru all the old 'coop' posts and dl-ed the whole zaero pack. The dll file was what I was after. Now it works fine although some of my saved games seem to disappear. Also I'm not sure what difficulty level it's starting on but I suspect it's not 'hard'. How do I set up the skill level when I start the game? I would prefer extra-hard, if possible.

set skill 0  (easy)
set skill 1  (medium)
set skill 2  (hard)
set skill 3  (hard+)

Do you have any place where you've explained this in more detail? I've always been interested in the how and why of the "game is write protected" feature.
