Config Tweaking
« on: May 11, 2009, 01:48:43 PM »
Hey folks, just a question - but first a little background.  I used to play q2 when I was younger (about 10 years ago, I was around 11 or 12) and that got me started on my way into q3.  After playing q3 for a while I sort of stepped out of the scene and now am just getting back into playing q2 again.  With that said - in Q3 I often played OSP/CPMA and loved the feel of the game play with how my config was setup.

I realize that Q2 is obviously a very different platform but I'm inclined to believe I may still yet be able to get a similar setup.  I see mention of a R1Q2 or whatever that is but I'm hesitant because it's not like i suck with how things are setup from Id.  I've addressed the visual problems by making some changes to the GL settings  but if i post up my config is there anyone who can take a look and maybe advise other changes i could make?  Or even just suggestions in general if anyone is familiar with the OSP/CPMA setup.  Thanks all!

 :welcome:

Here are some common settings with the values I use  :
set gl_modulate "5"
set vid_gamma "0.4"
set intensity "2.0"

r1q2 and aprq2 are improved q2 clients.
r1gl is a opengl driver from the maker of r1q2.

For more info about r1q2 see :
http://tastyspleen.net/quake/forums/index.php?PHPSESSID=f542adac31ac2212efdb52b2cfbbba6a&topic=5223.0

And for more info about aprq2 see :
http://maniac.aq2world.com/apr/

r1q2 is used the most around here.
aprq2 has for example build in winamp controls and on screen chat hud.
I use the aprq2 client.

And if you use a improved client like r1q2 or aprq2 you can use anticheat.

So continue using the q2 3.20 client or take my advice and pick a improved q2 client, tweak it with the settings from the "The easiest way to install R1Q2!" topic and

I second the recommendation for an improved client, especially R1Q2 with R1GL and the AntiCheat module.

R1Q2 has improved netcode to allow you to download maps, sounds, env, models, etc much faster than the regular old 3.20 client.

Using R1GL will allow you to use image formats other than PCX and TGA, like PNG. There is a hi-resolution texture pak out there that retextures everything to look much better than the original lower-res textures. You can also use additional paks for things like different health numbers, a different console background, etc, which use PNG images instead of PCX. In my opinion, the R1GL driver renders things much smoother as far as speed and surface appearance.

AntiCheat is not required for folks to play at Tastyspleen, but it's still good to use to let people know you aren't cheating. There's still a few people (idiots) who will claim that AntiCheat is "hacked" or "doesn't work", but nevermind those fools. They wouldn't know their ass from a hole in the ground.

 :welcome:

A few pointers...

If your aiming seems a bit lagged, try using an infared mouse with a USB connection. R1Q2 has the ability to disable Windows mouse acceleration too, which might otherwise make your mouse perform a little unpredicatable. If your mouse sensitivity settings still seem to be too fast and hard to control no matter what you do, you might find that increasing your FOV setting will smooth it out a little. I use an FOV setting of 110 (90 is the game default). I also have my gun handedness set to fire from the center, which removes the gun barrel from view and also helps you to see more of the action going on in front of you.

All awesome advice.  I will probably try out the R1Q2 soon.  Just so I know where to look, one of the things I loved about CPMA was setting the opponent player models to a bright white version of Keel (pretty large model)... would anyone happen to know if thats something easily done through the R1 program or should i look for a .pak file for that?

to do that in Q2, you'll need a .pak of custom skins for the male/female models.

some of the brighter ones will be in .png format, requiring you to use the ref_r1gl.dll that comes with r1q2, as your renderer (no matter what client you choose)

These are some that I use:

http://ir.tastyspleen.net/files/brightskinpak.zip

They aren't the solid bright colored ones that some people use, but they are significantly brighter than the stock ones and they come in colors you wont see in most q2 maps, so they stand out nicely.

That pak will work with your stock quake2 because it contains 2 sets of skins, one of which is in png and the other set is in .pcx

The png ones are much better tho, so even if you stick with the stock q2 client, I would recommend using r1gl in your config.
You'd essentially have to download it, put it in your c:\quake2\ folder and change the line in your config that says "set vid_ref gl" to "set vid_ref r1gl"

Realistics verry large collection of pak files -> http://realistic.tastyspleen.net/PAKS/

more skins than you can shake a stick at.

Mine are like UUD's,  except generally green for males and blue for females.
Some specific skins are different,  one or two use the white,  a few the beige..   but all are fullbright

Some really nice skins done by Elysium,  there used to be a purple Female skin.
not there but I still have it.   PNG I think,  so will need r1gl.
       http://tastyspleen.net/quake/forums/index.php?topic=1610.msg25562#msg25562

Another cfg settings that I think you can explore with r1gl are  gl_coloredlightmaps  and  cl_railtrail

gl_colored lightmaps 0 takes out colored light..  Edge for example will be grey instead of orange
with aprq2 this command  is r_coloredlightmaps.  Changes don't go into effect untill you do a vid_restart.

cl_railtrail changes your railtrail color..   think its like from 1-255.  I use 113 :)

Here is a thread that shows what the game looks like for alot of people

With gl_coloredlightmaps 0.3 (r1q2) or r_coloredlightmaps 0.3 (aprq2) you get nice colors. Not too grey and not too orange.

I second the recommendation for an improved client, especially R1Q2 with R1GL and the AntiCheat module.

Now I am confused,,,,," R1Q2 with R1GL and the AntiCheat" All this time I thought all of these where like the same or maybe a bundle pack, but what I am reading is one could use the R1GL without the anticheat???? I just messaged "Console" about this. I need to know how to uninstal all three of these out of my Quake2 folder and start over then.

I'll try and offer some help.

You don't need to uninstall anything, but if you wanted to, just delete "R1Q2.exe", "ref_r1gl.dll", "ref_r1gl.pdb" and "anticheat.dll"

Then, go to r1ch.net, grab the installer from the r1q2 section and install all of those things again following the on screen instructions.

Now, let's say you have a pak file you want to use. dump it into quake2/baseq2 and name it pakx.pak, x being a number.

Open up r1q2, ensure r1gl is set as the renderer. either using the options or by opening config.cfg with notepad and setting the renderer as "r1gl".

as for all the gl, cl, etc commands people are offering suggestions to using, create an autoexec.cfg file and type them into there. This will make sure they always load like this, it will still work in config.cfg but just for neatness sake and autoexecs are useful.

There is little else you need to do with regards to r1q2, anticheat and r1gl, once the r1gl renderer is selected and you use r1q2 to play with (just use as if it was quake2.exe) you're done. anticheat loads automatically.

http://ir.tastyspleen.net/files/r1q2-websetup.exe

that's the web setup/installer that adam's talking about.

when you hit this screen, you can check and uncheck the files you want installed.

R1Q2 is the replacement for quake2.exe (client)

R1GL is the replacement for your ref_gl.dll, and can be used with various clients (renderer)

Anticheat will work with these clients: r1q2, aprq2, q2pro and egl

If i could exchange some of the color though for speed and quickness!!! lol,,, Thanks alot you all,, Back to the tweaking board again. I guess we are never satisfied!

I thought I was using the quake2.exe and set vid_ref r1gl, but when I start quake, it renders to software mode. Did something get screwed here in my config?
