New metal albums..
« on: May 02, 2009, 04:31:31 AM »
My favorites of 2008, in no order:

Unearth - the March -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60jSo4BnVmU

All that remains - overcome -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TovkAI_o7kQ

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnhDVvfGG80

Testament - the formation of damnation -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9HKLsJ_2jE

I'd have to say that Hordes of Chaos by Kreator is the best metal album I've heard in 2009. No surprise in this really, it's Kreator.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZHhEQfzc5s

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y7m1mU2JbRc

Their albums have always rocked and always will. Can't really name a number 2, but here are a few anyway:

Wrath by Lamb of God: Very surprising for me to even mention lamb of god, being that I have never liked them whatsoever. This new cd kinda owns though. They incorporate thrashier riffs and decent solos in it. This one gets a

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncpgFBJzBWI&feature=related

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wftbNxqwljc

Crack in the skye(I think that's the name of the album?) by mastodon: It's decent for mastodon, but still just an ok album. Not a big mastodon fan, although they were pretty cool live when I saw them and slayer when i was 15 years old.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQ3ehmsQSV0&feature=PlayList&p=1361F0A76559EAA4&index=8

Infection by Chimaira: Chimaira is somewhat of an interesting band. Not insanely talented or anything but I've always had an ear for them. I have to say that I was somewhat disappointed in their new album, being that in the 2+ years it took them to put it out their sound may have gotten worse  BUT, nevertheless, it's still in your face heavy ass riffs with subwoofer hits haha.. still a  for the most part imo.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_UnkIy2X9E&feature=PlayList&p=6EE0BE394F24E1D9&index=6

Albums of 2009 one shouldn't even bother themselves with:

trivium - shogun

I'll triple this list at least once I get home and have my music collection in front of me, i'm at work and it's early.

When I saw the album "Crack the Skye" I was like "what?!" for a minute because there's a band called Crack the Sky, and they're not metal at all. Gonna check out the stuff you posted then fully comment.

Down is supposed to be hitting the studio from October to December to record Down IV, and probably release it sometime around Spring 2010. I can't wait to hear it. The last album they did (Down III: Over The Under) was absolutely awesome. An excellent fusion of stoner metal with a psychadelic classic rock twist. I'm hoping that Phil Anselmo and the rest of the guys in Down decide to keep Down together on a permanent basis rather than going back to their other bands. Superjoint Ritual was good, but nowhere near as interesting to listen to as Down.

Hell yeah, Down IV. Didn't know they were recording it anytime soon considering the gaps in between their previous albums.

Kreator is pretty tight, but I'm still lagging several months behind, listening to Death Magnetic and Dragonforce's Ultra Beatdown IN BETWEEN the tens of classic rock albums I'm trying to listen to and U2' No Line on the Horizon (definitely their magnum opus). But If someone can post a few more well-rated metal albums up, I'll give a try, just make sure they aren't black metal, I'm not too fond of that blasphemy a few actually call anything close to music.

Hell yeah, Down IV. Didn't know they were recording it anytime soon considering the gaps in between their previous albums.

I never really expected them to record Down II. I figured that first one was just a one time deal. I liked the first one a lot, but the second one totally blew me away. A lot of the fans of the first one were kinda let down by how different #2 was, they expected it to be primarily straight metal, at least that's what several of my friends said about it. I was itching like crazy to hear some new stuff from them ever since the second one, and I was really glad to see that #3 continued a lot of the same bluesy jazzy experimental elements. I have all confidence that #4 will continue that tradition yet again. I just hope Phil Anselmo takes a little better care of himself from now on. On the last album, it seemed like his voice was starting to show signs of cracking and age, probably due to the years of hard living he's subjected himself to.

Down IV is supposed to feature a few already finished tracks that didn't make the final cut for Down III, as well as brand new material. I'd guess that those few songs were not weeded out based on quality, but probably just to bring the overall play time of the album down to more decent size. Eh, I dunno why though, Type O Negative has put out one or two that damn near filled up 80 minutes of play time.

And speaking of which, if anyone else is an old school metal fan, I'm sure you remember his band before Type O Negative called Carnivore. They combined a nice amount of thrash with some new york styled punk/hardcore and began pioneering what would later be known as the "goth" sound that Type O Negative has always been famous for. Well anywho, Peter Steele reformed Carnivore for a little while in 2006 for the Wacken Open Air metal festival in Germany. They were supposed to be putting out a brand new album sometime this year as well as touring in support of it. Haven't heard any word about it yet though. Perhaps it'll get pushed back to 2010 or not at all. I hope not, I'd love to see Peter Steele one more time playing all those old Carnivore songs, screaming like a madman instead of singing like he always used to.

Man, I haven't listened to carnivore in forever. I remember them having some cool acoustic songs as well as thrash elements too. I no longer have any music by them, what's your favorite album focalor?

Down II and III are very close for me. I like the over-all style of III way better, but a few individual songs like beautifully depressed and ghosts along the mississippi are written so good... Probably still like III more though.

Picking one song as a favorite is impossible. From Down II, my 4 favorites were:
  • Ghosts Along the Mississippi
  • Learn From This Mistake
  • Lies, I Don't Know What They Say But...
  • Landing on the Mountains of Meggido

From Down III:
  • Beneath The Tides
  • In The Thrall Of It All
  • Nothing In Return

From NOLA:
  • Stone The Crow
  • Bury Me In Smoke

If we're talking Carnivore, who can forget the classic intro to Retaliation, "Jack Daniels and Pizza", where the album begins with a guy puking his guts up in a toilet. "Angry Neurotic Catholics", "Male Supremacy", "God Is Dead", "World Wars III and IV", "S.M.D. (Suck My Dick)", "Race War", "Jesus Hitler", "Manic Depression", "Sex and Violence". They all used to get spun at least once every weekend on the weekly Wreckage show on WREK 91.1, the Georgia Tech run radio station. Ah, those were the good old days. Many a Friday night we'd sit up all night drinking our redneck punk asses off until the show ended at about 8am. Sometimes we'd call in and harass the hell out of Bob Vincent (the original DJ/host of the show) even though we still thought he was a pretty cool guy. Apparently Peter Steele thought he was pretty cool too for helping promote him so hard around Atlanta, because he stuck his name in the list of thank you's on the Bloody Kisses album, which is another one he would play religiously. Alas, one night he allowed the guys from the local band Dick Delicious and the Tasty Testicles to come run amok live on the air, which got the swift attention of the station manager. He didn't host the show but for another few weeks after that little incident, which featured many colorful words you're not allowed to say on the radio, along with the fact that they were probably snorting coke right there on the consoles when the manager walked in.

Any old school metalheads will certainly remember the exceedingly talented English band called Carcass. After calling it quits around the time they released Swansong (an album which was pretty sub-par in my opinion compared to their previous material), I never thought they'd play again. But last summer they began a reunion tour without the original drummer and with Michael Amott from Arch Enemy as a secondary guitarist to Bill Steer. If you've never really paid attention to who Bill Steer is and you are a guitar fan, you really should. The man is one of the best around. He can play circles around any other melodic styled rhythm/lead guitarist out there. In fact, he makes a lot of these melodic metal bands who are so popular these days look like total amateurs the way he played all of his extremely complex stuff from memory. Anyway, as far as I know, they're still supposed to be touring here and there throughout this summer. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they might actually decide to record some brand new material with this current lineup even though they have not publicly announced or hinted at any plans to do so. Maybe this time Jeff Walker will write some lyrics comparable to the earlier stuff.

yeah Steer has always been able to shred. is Michael the older or younger bro from arch enemy? Arch enemy is actually one of my favorite mainstream euro melo-death metal bands, and of course carcass owns... did steer also play for napalm death? (that's one band i have never liked...)

I've been trying to get ahold of 'zero order phase' by Jeff Loomis for quite sometime now. It's been out for about a year now and i STILL haven't been able to get the album off piratebay...

Anyway, this guy is simply mind-blowing to me. Such a nice combination of skill, style, and song-writing....

pretty much all the tracks are good. thinking about getting loomis' signature schecter as my next guitar... 7-strings are the shit.

Buy the fucking album you cheapskate.

:raincloud:

(yes, it's excellent... i purchased it the moment someone sent me the youtube link to Jato Unit back in january.)

I don't worship the devil. Jesus is Lord, friend. He died for your sins. He will forgive you if you just ask.
