Just started using Xp and I cannot alt-tab out of Quake 2. I tried binding the win_noalttab to no avail. Any help maximizing XP with Q2 would be appreciated!

You can't use alt-tab, but if you use Quake 2 in window instead of fullscreen, you can open your menu or console which will give you your mouse pointer, then you can click outside the window.

Alt-tabbing works with nocheat client... I can't remember if it works with quake2.exe... I'm thinking it doesn't. I do know you have to have another program up in the background or it won't work period. I usually have internet explorer up or another small program that doesn't take any bandwidth.

I use nocheat so I just tried that, it didn't work. Could depend on version of Windows, Shadow and I are using XP, I have SP2 installed.

i use the standard client and i have no problems. but i play windowed
with a few other apps open in the background usually im always switching back and fourth between few of them some ppl always have to chatt with me while im playing...
esp this superfragger guy he asks me if he can *boink* me
you can always use the windows key on your keyboard that should take you back to the start taskbar and switch you out of quake2
also whats your ingame refresh rate set at? it gets kinda messy if default your ingame refresh is at 60hrz and your desktop 75+

So I tried windowed mode. Works fine. It also fixed my GL problem. The only issue is that I want full screen! Guess I can't have my cake and eat it too...

You can always set your window to the same resolution as your desktop, that way it will be like fullscreen.

I think that it is more of a video card driver issue. I have the same prob with alt + tab, and when i used to use integraded video it worked fine (software mode) but once i installed a video card + driver it will not alt tab without screwing up the desktop resolution. It's not just xp cause i installed a nvidia video card on my old win98 box (which used to work with alt +tab) and now it also does not work. so it happens in BOTh XP and 98.
Just use alt+enter. another thing that you can do is change the screen position in your cfg so that when you alt+enter out of your quake 2, it will move the window totally off of your screen. This is what i do and its just as good as using alt tab.

I just found this while playing with a program called qbind.
Type "win_noalttab 0" in the console, this may fix your problem. If it is still a problem that is, this is an old thread.

Windows Key + D = Display desktop, should minimize all windows
Windows Key + M = Minimize all windows
I find Winkey + D works better though.

Just use a virtual desktop program, and you can switch between those desktops at ease, which also includes, of course, leaving the game for a while in order to surf the web or whatever and then return back to the game.
Virtual desktops are standard for Linux, but there are freeware programs for Windows, too. Comes in handy anyway.

I have been on Linux since the early times of that OS.
After an episode with Suse Linux I now use Debian SID, which is great and a really FREE version of Linux, with absolutely no commercial background.
99% of the time I play quake2 under Linux, and there are plenty of excellent quake2 clients, like icculus quake2 or nocheat. My choice has been and still would be icculus, due to its extremely beautiful graphics (when compiled with maxpak support - I never found a q2 client with such amazing graphics, neither under windows nor under Linux) - unfortunately, I can't use it in higher screen resolutions (in contrast to nocheat), because it doesn't provide a way to increase console fonts, and I don't want to hurt my eyes reading that tiny text. ;-)
