Yes, I know we already technically have a banner, as jitspoe so wonderfully models it here: Ain't he precious?
But, sadly, we are in need of something with some more snazz and pop to it - though the raggedy-banner has served us well for the past three years. I am in touch with a friend who owns a shop who does screen printing, gaming, modelling, etc. Hell, I'll plug his shop page here: Goblins Grotto. Believe me, his store is much more full of wonderful crap than his site is. Anywho, he does big banners, and at a pretty damn reasonable price. I figured if we got a nice grommeted vinyl banner, say 6 foot by 3, it'd make a good sexy standing at Quakecon this year. At $6.50 per square foot (a damn reasonable price, and local too!), a 6x3 would come out to.... *drumroll*
117 dollars! Gasp! I don't have that kind of cash! At least, not at the moment. In a month, with the new job, it shouldn't be a problem. But hey, I figured we might want to partake in a joint ownership of this baby. It'd add to our already-strong communal spirit.

So, if anybody is interested in donating for this years banner (this especially applies to those attending Quakecon this year - or any year), let me know, and we'll get this ball rolling. My Gimp skills aren't the best, but a 6x3 banner (full color, even) should be a snap with the plethora of Tastyspleen graphics generated during the logo contest way back when. Of course, if anybody else wants to do a design, feel more than welcome.

Sure a bummer I won't make it to Qcon this year - it was happenstance that I stopped by last year....

Anyhow, If a paper banner is aceptable, I would love to support Tastyspleen in Dallas by offering printing the banner for free! Yes, free -if someone can help with shipping to get it to someone going to Quakecon.

I work for the leading manufacturer of photographic printers in the US (try a google for Chromira), and make prints all day. No problem making a couple big prints to support this community! The prints will be on photographic paper - not that crap-ass inkjet stuff, but REAL photographic paper. I can do up to 30" wide by any length. I would probably print two, so they can be hung back-to-back for 360-degree goodness. The photo paper is thick and strong. This is the same printer that makes prints that hang in the oval office, and in the Smithsonian.

The file would need to be between 100 and 300 DPI, in TIFF or JPEG format, RGB (NOT CMYK), no compression or extra layers (if it's a TIFF). The colors of the RA-4 photo paper don't go neon, but are as realistic and vibrant. Personal-message me if anyone's interested. It's not fancy vinyl, but it's the highest image quality available today, on good strong paper, and it's free!

Hey, free is good! The main reason for vinyl would be it's durability and ability to hang in a suspended-in-air fashion, as it will probably be mounted on two poles or something. If the paper can perform that kind of feat, then I'd be happy to send you the file that jquest so awesomely created.

That's why I always print two - the paper tends to have a bit of curl to it, so mounting two pieces back-to-back keeps it flat. You can use double-stick tape around the edges while on-site during setup, and that works fine, then hook or tape it top the poles.

Go ahead and send me the file... I'm not sure just how to get it to me, but if you have an FTP site, you can post a link... or e-mail it... I think Yahoo has a 10MB limit, which will be just about how big an appropriate JPEG will be (a TIFF would be about 250-600MB). Remember 300 DPI at-size. If you have something that's lower resolution it will work. PLEASE DO NOT take a low-res file, and make it bigger in Photoshop, and send it! That's just a waste of bandwidth. If the file is in vector format (PDF, illustrator, DXF, etc.) I can likely rasterize it myself so we get full resolution at vector-graphic file sizes.

Received the file - good deal sending in PDF! Rasterizing it yielded a nice 560MB TIFF.... that woulda been a bitch eo e-mail!

The final size will be 30 x 56 inches. I know you had it at 36", but our machines print on the standard width of photo paper, which is 30".

I will be able to print some time this week! I can ship them rolled up in about a 3" diameter x 31" long roll... stay tuned!

I noticed that the venue for QuakeCon has changed.... I was wondering, because last year at the Hilton, there are a very large Church group (some sort of Presbyterians I think), that was also having a convention at the same time. It was classic to see all those well-dressed Christians milling about in the lobby, with Iron Maiden's

Number of the Beast

blasting from the Guitar Hero contest in the next room! It warmed my heart, it did! I used to scare Christians with that very same song back in the 80's!

Good stuff!

But alas, I'd put money on that same church group forcing Q-Con out of the Hilton... I've been to many events that have been booted out by church groups (Middle-Eastern/bellydance type events, which the Church also frowns upon)...
