Strange Gaming conditions at Xquake

I've had this happen to me a few times lately. Yesterday, it happened again. I was playing very smoothly when I first started playing yesterday.
I actually had to turn down my mouse sensitivity because it was just a little too loose on aiming. Once I set it lower, I was kicking butt (after Apple, aka "Ladybugs" left, heheh). I was playing under an alias, "Bloop", before switching to my normal nic.
But the bottom line was that I was moving around maps with ease, and had excellent response rates when firing weapons.
Then, a few maps (and different players) later, all of the sudden my movements were much less fluid. Some lag when firing weapons, and I was getting beat to the punch, so to speak, when playing when I wasn't earlier.
I don't know if it's a matter of how many players are on at one time, or maybe it's particular players somehow eating bandwidth (doesn't seem possible), or if there's some kind of spamming going on?
My ping doesn't change, and Net Monitor isn't showing spikes. I'm not running any background apps when this happens.
I do notice this when (sorry JQ) JQuestt starts playing. Of course, that's probably a coincidence, and no slam against JQ, who regularly kicks azz on the server. Is it possible for a player or players to eat more bandwidth or somehow lag others?
Or does this sound like just the server getting overloaded? If that's true, why is it affecting me more than others?
Nothing more frustrating than pushing that "Fire" button on the mouse and having it delay and getting nailed. Especially when one was running 180 degrees to the better just moments before.
Could this be a "Rate" setting in config.cfg? I'm running at the maximum rate, 12000. Should I be running lower?

My connection to xquake has been very bad as of late. Weapons fire with no sound, phone jacks, stalls, red spikes, at times it is unplayable. But I have also noticed what you talk about, sometimes when I get close to some players, I can't seem to fire at all, very odd. I know there are at least 2 hops on my tracert that are bad, the one right before xquake and another sprint hop that goes up to 350ms and back all the time. So it seems I am hosed unless the fix these hops. And you also have the "server" lag on top of it.

I was playing last night from 8 to 8:30 and was noticing some considerable lag and so was everyone else. I was pinging ok
150-190 but everything was freezing up on me at seni-regular intervals.

yea its probably all on the server hardware side. it seemed to be pretty bad yesterday. Dont know what all processes are running on over there.
Husker i would have the same probs as you a while back. turns out some of the ips i would grab would take a diff route to xquake some were crap and some are good.

And I must say I agree with AJ. It has to be something on the server side. I play BF1942, along side with other mods and what-knots for the game, and Quake II and I don't get any lag on the any of these other servers, with the eception of when my net goes out, and even then I don't lag. I just get disconnected. I sure hope it clears up soon or I'll be singing "Kansas City, Here I Come" as i start playing on the bot infested server of Kansas. Ok so it's not filled with bots but they are there.

I noticed lag is directly correlated to time also.

Yeah, that typically happens
Yes, lag sucks but I love xquake so I'm staying till the lag leaves which I'm sure it will eventually.

im thinking its a problem on the routers again but more than one this time. last time i was complaing about the lag from a route i took in but it seems its problematic on a few of them now you guys need to post some netgraphs and see what going on. here is mine the border router before xquake pings 275+ ive be watcing it go from 30-500 hehe.
but add that in with what im pretty sure is hardware and running processes on the server other than quake. and its a world of fun!

hehehe i guess i have a lag bot or somethin now
j/k slik
but i notice the responce kinda "slow" at times .... but you just have to adjust for it a bit. I have my settings at :
cl_maxfps:80
rate:8000
As far as me getting lag as I approach players? Naw, I've never experienced that before.
Evil? Maybe ~-~-~
