I think it would be neat to have a client that has just feeds of spectating.  it would also be nice to be able to multi-spectate, like a split screen. I'm betting it can't be to difficult, if you're a programmer, to relay q2 spectate data to a q2 client.  you could probably even write an mIRC script to do it (even though you wouldn't want to).

I personally am not bothered by spectator talk, and couldn't you just delete that sound anyways? (or maybe have a feature in r1q2 to disable the sound? and keep the text from appearing outside of an open console window? these simple features would both eliminate the need for a spectator relay)  the only thing spectator text can do is interfere with sound prediction, which depending on the amount of people talking, isn't usually much at all (plus it interferes with both players not just one).  but I guess the real problem is some people can't HELP but to read what's been written to the screen, so they are pissed because they are 'forced' to pay attention to that instead of the game.

but really if the sound of the text is a problem with hearing your opponent, then couldn't your opponent just spam some binded text every few seconds to diminish your ability to hear them accurately? will we hear complaints then to?

one other reason why I favor a spectator relay is the fact that if you can spectate anyone at any time without their knowledge it would be easier to catch cheats.  I notice that most people you're about to demo because they are suspicious, leave almost as soon as you enter spectator mode (or disable their cheats with binded keys). the fact they see you enter spectator mode is a dead give away for them.

I've been mulling over something like that for awhile now... One thought was to take the "serverdemo" data that q2 can write out, and pipe it over tcp/ip to the relay/mirror server... The relay server would interpret the serverdemo feed (with optional delay), and allow clients to connect as spectators to observe the live "playback".

Or some variation on the above....

Regards,

:exqueezeme:

Anychance that that playback could have streamin audio attached to it, so that commentary on matches can be realtime and not delayed compared to the action?

If you're not a programmer, don't speculate about programming.  It's people like you that make my job difficult.

Just kidding.

Kinda.

well I know it is possible to code an mIRC script that can do basically the same thing with a few dll's (but might be buggy or not able to handle much load performance wise). and of course things like these are possible to program with 'minimal' effort.  r1ch already has his own client/server, I'm sure he could build off of that to make a spectator relay, not necessarily from 'scratch'. if it wasn't for people making suggestions some things wouldn't ever be made.  programmers aren't exactly known for their imaginations. just kidding.  kinda  :peace:

on a side note, I am mostly well aware of what actions can be programmed and what requires to much work or what is virtually 'impossible'.

get to work!  :bondage:

This is what the GTV / MVD protocol is for. Unfortunately, it still isn't 100% finalized, but it's in use in Europe to broadcast their matches and has had over 100 spectators watching games without a problem. It's currently available in Q2PRO by SkulleR and I hope to implement it into R1Q2 once it's stable.

...Cool!

I hope to implement it into R1Q2 once it's stable.

For an added challenge, please implement it as an mIRC script.

gtv ftw.  As R1CH said, they use it overseas, and it works pretty good. Have used it many times to watch EDL matches and the GTV has TONS of people on, and no complaints from anyone playing the match.
