Invisible cheater on ffa server.

When i joined tastys dm server so did i see something i wouldnt think i would see.

A guy was invisible and i was like wtf.

I looked around after been shoot but couldnt see one.

And then, i was killed but no one was there.

The guy called naruto walked around with invisible skin.

So how do u guys see this?

It's not really cheating. He's simply exploiting your own loaded models. When using certain servers, you will automatically download the invisible model. I would suggest going into players folder and removing that model folder completely, then go to the multiplayer options menu and set it to where you will no longer download player models and skins. I use the brightskin pak that Elysium posted here. I also had my settings to where I would download player skins. I got sick of people using completely black skins (particularly |iR|Devious and SilyBily{tpt}, SilyBily was camping in a dark corner with the railgun, which was the final straw), so I removed ALL non-stock skins for ALL models as well as ALL models that were not male, female, or cyborg. Then I changed it to where I will no longer download skins or models, only maps. Now everyone is forced to show up on my end as neon blue clad males, neon yellow clad females, and neon green clad cyborgs. Problem solved.

It's not technically cheating, they're using your own choice to download particular models and skins against you. You have the power to prevent it.

OR... EVEN BETTER...

Keep that folder. Switch your download options to no longer download skins. Then go back and stick a brightskin file in that invisible skins place and use the same name as the invisible skin for the file. Then you will be able to use the invisible skin yourself against him, while he probably won't be able to see you... unless of course he reads this and gets wise to it.

Hmm, if you couldn't see that player at all it sure is an interesting skin. The q2 palette has an invisible color (pink-ish) but as far as i know it doesn't work on models, only HUD's and textures.

R4zor, play the demo again and type 'skins' in console. You'll see he's set his skin to; opentdm/null
This isn't a correct path to a player model but you probably have a skin called null.pcx & null_i.pcx in the players/male-folder. Just delete that crap or make a copy of the grunt skin and rename it to null.

As I was saying, when using certain servers, you will automatically download the opentdm model. It will go in c:/quake2/baseq2/players/opentdm. If you hit X to bring up the score during a game, you will see that someone is using it when there is no player picture at all by their name. I would recommend keeping the same null_i.pcx file in order to spot the specific person using it, and then use some kind of special brightskin to rename as null.pcx, maybe even something a different color from your other brightskins if you use any, this way you can recognize and specifically target the smart-ass who decided to be a prick and use it. This way, you can also select to use the opentdm model yourself to appear invisible to THEM, whilst you can see them clearly.

I believe opentdm does use a null player model, in order to make its in-eyes spectator mode work.

So the thing to do would probably be to move that folder from: baseq2/players/opentdm to: opentdm/players/opentdm.

That way that model will only be available while using the opentdm mod.

Its unfortunate that people have decided to abuse this, because there are tons of models available to Q2, but I only use male/female because of this.  There are tons of other custom models that the maker was too lazy to make vweaps correctly for them so you can't see what weapon they're using against you.   Yet another reason I dont download models.

I believe opentdm does use a null player model, in order to make its in-eyes spectator mode work.

This is due to a stupid design choice in 3.20, no matter what the mod is, player models get downloaded to the baseq2 directory which allows this 'exploit' to work. As usual, people using 3.20 suffer from bugs  . Why people still use such a broken and insecure client I don't know...

   I found myself at one time moving all my maps to baseq2 so I wasn't d/l them for each mod I played...


I have the same skin problem discussed here, and I use r1q2. 
Usually I catch on quick in ffa that a person is using the invis skin and turn skins off.
Makes for an awkward moment or two trying to start my next team game,  but I'm getting better with it.

I seem to remember a lot of invisible guys on TS servers a year or so ago. They would cease to be invisible once they killed themselves or was killed.    They would only be invisible for the first spawn of the map and it seemed to be random.

Could this be the same thing?

I've always experienced invisible skins on TS and other servers. Until I started keeping my downloads off. It's easier to find another server than to go back into the model directory and either delete or replace the model.

In the past when I've been willing to found out which player dir's these models were in, then replaced them with a bright skinned model the same size as their BBOX.

Since I leave my download options off, if i really have to see someone's model I manually type out the commands
download players/modelname/tris.md2
download players/modelname/weapon.md2
download players/modelname/skinname.pcx
download players/modelname/i_skinname.pcx

But that's only in the event that I want the model bad enough that I'm willing to type these commands. Another reason to leave my download options off is that I like to take NakedMan's word for it that he's not gay.
