nope, don't drive drunk, or drink much for that matter. of course I think drunk driving is wrong, but obviously whatever were doing isn't working.  the punishments aren't appropriate, and look at a friday or saturday night, a large percentage of the drivers are drunk.

Completely missing the point as usual.

Drunk drivers don't think about jail, it's the experience of jail itself (after the crime is committed) that discourages them from driving drunk again. The thought of jail is probably only a minor deterrent, as many people think "oh, that can't happen to me" regarding jail time.

A mistake is bumping into someone in a check out line, or spilling a drink on your desk.

I never feel that a car accident is a true mistake, I tend to think of it as a crime.  A person being wreckless, either talking on the phone, being drunk or just day dreaming, needs to be punished.  Now if an investigation occurs, which then deems the situation a true mistake or accident, then so be it. 

Killing some one or injuring them and claming it to be an accident or mistake is just a loop hole used for guilt.  But I may be biased due to experiences in my life.

well it would seem pretty reasonable that if a person chooses to get behind the wheel (no matter what their condition is) and they proceed to hit something with that car, then they were usually responsible for that action, and thus deserving of the punishment for that action.
