Sure.  I'm certainly open to ideas.

In my experience some players are easier to ban than others.  Occasionally some have really, really dynamic IPs.  Our ban system works with not just IP subnets, but also host name pattern matching.

The ban pertaining to this thread is fairly wide, as the person's IP was very dynamic.  It's a hostname ban, matching this regular expression:

  71-.*ca.comcast.net

So we have had to take steps to filter legit players through who happen to be in the same region.

What I would do is look at the different ip's people have connected with.

i.e.    24.120.45.x

Now, if only the last section of the person's ip changes where i placed the x, then they have 255 possible ip combinations.  To ban all of them, you would simply log into rcon and type "rcon sv addip 24.120.45.0/24".  That would take care of it.

On the other hand if they have a more dynamip ip such as 24.120.x.x, you would type "rcon sv addip 24.120.0.0/16" to ban all possible combinations of the last 2 ip sections. 

This method worked very well for me.  I only recall two people accidentally being banned by getting caught in the subnet of a cheater who i was attempting to keep off in the 2+ years I did it.

Cool, yeah we do subnet bans like that where possible.

But we also have to deal with uber dynamic IPs as well.  For example, all of the following IPs are for a single player, always on the same ISP (bas1-kingston08-.*dsl.bell.ca) within the past 90 days:

...but a search of our player/IP database shows me that would block off several legit players as well.

So in this case I would use a single hostname mask (bas1-kingston08-.*dsl.bell.ca), and then just make exceptions for legit players to get past the ban.

With uber dynamic IPs like the above, I'm not sure there's a perfect solution.  But I find the hostmask banning easier than entering tons of subnet bans.

I remember xpoze's ip was pretty dynamic, as was ditzu's.  Had trouble keeping them banned.
