Good article X'tyfe - although it was written in 2000, by the some what sane Courtney Love.  I wonder where she stands now after selling the rights of Nirvana's songs to T.V. shows and shoe commercials.  Which none of the money goes to the band - all to her and with out speaking with them.

None the less - it is pretty sad how bad artist take the 'injection' by the record companies.  They prey on the excited youth that basically signs on the dotted line for the fame and fortune lie - not understanding the fine print nor being given the option too.

The bands that make the major $$ - are those which sell massive amounts of merchandise.  But for me the moment I see a lunch box or a pezz dispenser with a band on it, they loose all integrity for me.  But who am I to judge, when they are just trying to make some money.

I have a friend who has a gold record on his wall for being a drummer in a slightly famous band.  He basically had nothing to show for it as well.

the best thing is to be your own record promoter and producer

sell cd our of trunk of car or at place you are playing

know a band that sell them that way at $10.00 each

they make $8.50 on each cd - they sell 10,000 to 12,000 cd each year

more than they would make with a record contract
