Help...

Alright I haven't been quaking in a while...
but I got some free time and I was trying to play but I got uber lagged...
every 10 seconds I get a lag for like a second...
I haven't changed my connection or anything like that...

Anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like a connection issue more than a quake issue.  Run tracert to east.tastyspleen.net or another tastyspleen server and see if there are any bad hops.  Contact your service provider to see if they know what's up.  Make sure you know what all your running programs and processes are.  You could have some spyware that is using your bandwidth periodically.

There are a million things it could be.  Isolate the problem, then fix it.

Some quick ways to narrow down the problem.

1. Play on your own server (e.g. at the console type map q2dm1).  Do you still have the problem?  (This helps isolate a network problem vs a game problem.)

2. Play on your own server and only use the keyboard, not the mouse, to spin your player around.. is the spinning consistent.  The try with the mouse?   (This helps isolate a Direct-X mouse input problem which feels like lag.)

3. If it is a network problem:
  - remove adware/spyware
  - don't run on a wireless connection (unless it is a good one)
  - use r1q2 with proper rate
  - run a network test such as "ping -s www.tastyspleen.net" or one of the web based network bandwidth tests
  - connect to tastyspleen and type "netgraph 1" at the console... what do you see?

Download and run adware and spybot search and destroy -- both are free and frequently updated.

yessir, and I finally got a computer at my home!! yes i know it's a miracle...
and we're getting cable so i'm uber excited... [in a month or so]
