Yeah, that's the main thing I heard about ATi, and also their cooling BLOWS ASS, definite no no if you are looking for a quiet system that's for sure.

In all due respect...ATI and nVidia are equal in pretty much all aspects. It's only a matter of preference...same thing with the AMD/Intel fiasco. If the price is right, I'll use either video card....before I stuck primarly to nVidia, but after this Radeon 9500 Pro and the X850 XT in the new machine, I've pretty much came to the conclusion that they're both good card brands.
BTW, all high-performance video cards have heat issues now and then. The upper-class Radeon cards compared to the 7000 series of the Geforce GPU are about equal in heat issues/problems.

its different with amd and intel
amd makes better CPUs overall, but what confuses people is they think more ghz = better and go with intel
id say there more equal to each other in quility compared to ati and nvidia though
amd can make a cpu say 2.4 ghz, and make it run as fast as a 3.0 ghz intel
who do think is better

Instead of buying a Geforce 6 and a motherboard separately I think I would save some money and buy a motherboard with an intergated Geforce 6 card. It has a PCI Express Slot so it is upgradeable.
http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?l1=3&l2=101&l3=0&model=1138&modelmenu=1
I might go for that option if I don't want to stretch my budget. However, ideally I would get:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103531
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814122245
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145573
Not sure what motherboard I should pick to go with it, but I want an nForce chipset. I heard that the motherboard is the most important thing you buy, and a shit motherboard will result in a shit system.

Well the problem is I need a new ATX case and CD-ROM drive. So, thats another $150 and I'm gonna end up spending $800. That is why the intergrated board was so appealing. Fortunately I read some of the reviews and it isn't that great.
I can't find a Gainward card anywhere. Video cards are expensive at my local stores so I will probably buy from Tiger Direct since they have a Canadian site. I don't know why video card manufacturers don't list all their specifications on their web sites such as Memory Bandwidth, Fill Rate, Pixel Pipelines, and Vertices per Second. I can't get that 7600GT though.
I might get this card:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1828833&Sku=P450-8576
These are the two boards I am considering:
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1539426&Tab=0&NoMapp=0
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1179727&Tab=0&NoMapp=0
Maybe one without SLI:

The 1st one, the gigabyte, is what I have, just not the SLi model, it's been pretty good so far, if you get it just watch out for the drivers, I needed to update mine (but I hear its like that with alot of mothherboards) The grafix card looks pretty decent too, i've got a 6600GT overclocked.. that 6800 looks nice.

I am taking your advice and getting a 6600GT.
I already got an Abit AN8 32X board because I found one at a good price. AMD dual cores are now under $200 so I will get a 3800 X2 or 4200 X2 or 4400 X2. Since I am on a budget it is easier to upgrade a video card than a CPU or a motherboard later on.

my thoughts on the original post -
ide/ata can be thought of as exactly the same thing..
"IDE became the term that covered the entire range of integrated drive/controller devices. Since almost all IDE drives are ATA-based, the two terms are used interchangeably. "
so what you want is a good motherboard, and a good harddrive
get the sata drive, and compatible motherboard
serial ata2 or whatever, can be thought of as the protocol, and it's much faster than ata/33/66 whatever
that's usually a big bottleneck for performance, and if you get that, you'll be set there
all the new processors will pretty much be all fine. the dual core technology is very good, go with that : )
something like converting an avi file, a better processor will speed things up for you
your old system hard drive, just sucked
it sounds like you have some good information in this post, hopefully this clears up what you asked

no a 64bit processor does not require a 64bit OS. Although it's kinda stupid not to utilize it...
Intel all the way...
