One idea..could be overheating...
Check the box is clean of dust bunnies and your cards are well seated. Perhaps move it to a better ventilated location -- if the box' air holes are up against a wall or desk.

what kinda OS?
and which engine?
You don't have any windows shortcut keys setup for "shutdown" or "standby mode" do you?
I had to change some settings on my comp because I had some shortcuts that did random things
like put the monitor in standby, or bring up the "sticky" keys message box....
I'd be trying to crouch and shoot or something and my monitor would turn off... lol.
I sure hope its something this simple, since almost every other possiblity would require one
of us to physically look at your machine to diagnose the prob...

There are some programs that run that Windows doesn't recognize as active.... and if you have the power/screensaver/hibernate settings set, it can cause problems.
I personally have not seen this with Quake2, but have with other games.

I don't worship the devil. Jesus is Lord, friend. He died for your sins. He will forgive you if you just ask.
