shut down menu freeze

heyas
so after i reformated the other day
i started getting this problem with shuting down
whern i goto Start --> Shutdown it works perfectly for a few mins after i boot, but after that. it will freeze for a min or 2 then it produces the menu. if i then press to restart or shut down it will go on to shut down or what ever
when it gets to the part where it tells me its shutting down (heh!) it will again freeze for a few min and then FINALY shut down lol
anyways, this is a big enough problem that i would consider reformating again to fix
but before i do that, id like to see if any programs and what ever
anyways i think this might be some reg tweaks i used, and im not sure which one it is
how could i go about seeping through that to find this?

problem has been solved (i think)
i found this after much googleing...
http://www.chris.narrabilis.com/wp/2005/04/28/a-windows-xp-shutdown-problem-solved/
the solution is only temporary, and requires the automatic update service to be fully disabled

Disabling automatic updates is one of the first things I do after a fresh Windows installation.

Because I don't want it just downoading any old update it wants, nor do I want it popping up all the time tellimg me there ready.
I like going and checking for myself, and chosing them.
Microsoft only releasing updates once a month, so it's not like I'm going to miss them, or not know when there ready.

the easiest way to shut down your system is hold the power button down for 5 seconds.
keep your system on standby, then when you come back just press ESC and you will be back on your desktop in 1 second.
