known issue with prev/next weapon??
« on: January 19, 2012, 08:51:27 PM »
hey folks, just started playing on a new machine with a new mouse/keyboard. they're a standard "new with a dell" keyboard/mouse, so certainly nothing fancy, or gaming specific.

seems as though most of my settings work, but the PREV and NEXT weapons. I like to have them set to WHEELUP/WHEELDOWN, which registers while in settings.

The problem is though when im IN GAME, WHEELUP/WHEELDOWN fail to switch weapons for me. Additionally, when I set other keys on the keyboard to handle these functions, they fail to work either.

The only problem so far that I've detected relates to PREV/NEXT weapon and no other control setting seems to be a problem. any thoughts?

Thanks a head of time, i appreciate it

Try making a copy of your config.cfg, rename it to face.cfg or something like that.

Put these commands at the bottom of that file.

 bind mwheelup "weapprev"
 bind mwheeldown "weapnext"

Pull up the console in game and type:  exec face.cfg

and...  hope it works.

Just a quick try at it.  If that doesn't do it then I'm sure some more back and forth with smarter people than I will get it resolved.

I have a cfg with every setting I tweak that I run when I start playing,  I don't trust config.cfg for some reason.
(5 I's in one line, my teachers would be proud)

anyhow...
Welcome to the forums

thanks for the reply reflex- im thrilled to have found an Q2 community. i more or less played daily from when the game was released until mid-2001 and shelved it for about 10 years and i'm lovin every second of my q2 reinstatement! (despite having to relearn all the jumps again, and being fairly miserable at them so far, lol)

so, yup. it appears as though the config.cfg is failing to save any changes after all. Thanks for pointing me in that direction. still don't have it figured out yet, but making copies of the .cfg and rebuilding new ones from scratch, is the avenue of tinkering i'll need to take.

i tried the "exec face.cfg" command, and the console confirmed that it was "execing face.cfg" (or something like that), but the settings did fail to load. but at least im in the neighborhood of getting this squared away.

thanks for the heads up, but not quite there yet.

I said it before, I'll say it again. The config.cfg file is written by the game at exit, don't edit it by hand. It's used to preserve your changes after changing binds in-game.
Make all your changes to autoexec.cfg or other config files and exec them from within autoexec.cfg.

Nobody talked about editing the config.cfg  :exqueezeme:

In my book on wep switching,  it's better to have specific keys to choose weps.

or multiple weps on each key.  The 'q' key gets me the super shotgun, unless I dont have it, then it selects the regular shotgun.

'r' looks for chain/hyper/machinegun

if I have chain out and want hyper,  hitting r again does it......

but anyway, thanks for the help guys. and thanks for those bind hints Reflex. been a long time since i've dabbled with all of this. been super fun to revisit and reignite this old hobby.

though, i've lost a little spring in my rocket-double-jumping-step!
