Why Quake

Wasn't Wolfenstein, doom, quake, and quake 2 all ported to the console by different developers? I know that wolfenstein was, which is what lead to the rats in the SNES version and the SNES Noahs Ark version. In fact there are some rumors floating around that carmack directly influenced the SNES version as a silent protest to the censorship of the SNES wolfenstein.

I don't see any console versions of doom released the same year as the ms-dos (original release)

Coming in late to this thread.  Q2 rawks through the ages!  Screw realism - if I want realism I'll get a fucking gun and go to the mall for some real realism!  But that means no re-spawn!

I grew up in the golden age of the arcade (which, sorry to say kids, ended with Donkey Kong - I'm talking Astroids and Tempest, et.al.).  Anyhow, I love the fast action - Q2 is the best for superhuman feats of leaping skill, and yes, the nuances of the engine's admittedly flawed physics makes it amenable to people who have long years experience of playing it.  Agree with the earlier posts that new games are merely pretty with no depth to their actual game-play.

Ok I didn't really read anything but the first post..

Q2's engine allows you to do stuff you can't do in other fps. Increasing the distance/speed of your strafe jumps through 'circle jumping' is what I would place a large emphasis on.....if I wasn't drunk and about to go to sleep. But yeah, the physics and stuff. maybe i'll elaborate tomorrow.

I'd like to echo what other's have said.  Quake 2 is the only FPS that I play anymore.  I've played Q2 on and off for over 12 years now, and something about it keeps me coming back.  I've tried other FPS', but none of them have ever really measured up to Q2 in my mind.  The game-play/control, and game balance are the biggest strengths in my mind.  The weapon selection is superb, and there's nothing more awesome than the railgun.  Also, you always feel like there's plenty of room for your own improvement.  There's no limit on how far you can polish your skills.  It's a lot like the sport of golf in that way...you're never a "perfect" a player, and you're always trying to improve your game.  That's a BIG part of why it's still fun for me after all of these years.   I grew up playing the original Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM, etc...and when I finally got a decent internet connection in 1998, I started playing Q2 online, and I've never had more fun playing any other video game.  It's simply an amazing piece of software, and I hope I'm still playing it from a retirement community when I'm old and gray.

Q2 for life!!! I have been playin this game for about 10 years. i took a 6 year break from playing online cause to be honest i didn't think anyone played anymore, but then i came across xfire and have been playing on tastyspleen servers for about 1 month now and i must say it brings back alot of memories of old clans and old friends. I just love this wonderful game. way better than q3. i hope this game is still going in 10 years time cause i will probably still be playin

I'm old enough that I played Pong and loved it. Back when I was in Jr. college and arcade type games were big, I put enough quarters in an Asteroids machine to buy one outright. I played something (mech warriors?) in an arcade that you sat in and looked through a binocular at red dashed lines on a black background that made you feel as if you were moving and shooting and thought it was groundbreaking technology. Then came the pc and DooM. Then DooM on a local network with real live, thinking, tricky, sneaky, cheapshot artist coworkers. Then Quake, mostly one player. Then Quake II on the "danged ol' internet". Q2 Capture the Flag on a T1 line at work (after hours) put me in gaming nirvana.  

It's FUN. It's simple, yet not easy to master - especially when playing against the young geeks and old gurus on TS. All this has reminded me that I need to PLAY for a change. See you on the servers.
