Trick jump tutorials for newer players?
« on: March 15, 2010, 09:34:53 PM »
I was just thinking, do you think there is even any interest for newer players? would they even check the forums?

I'm just thinking, maps like q2dm1, ztn2dm3, match1 maybe, q2rdm2, just single jump tutorials, with screen shots breaking the jump down with explanation and a demo of the jump.

I was thinking it could target players from other quakes, or from maybe ffa or something, that are trying to get into tdm or 1v1 where landing those certain jumps becomes a bit more important

Ya know the players that have a basic knowledge of movement, that can circle jump, strafe jump, understand double jumping

Could be for jumps like mh to rail on rdm2, from the stairs to the shards outside on q2dm1, how to get mh on q2dm1, how to go from the stairs to rail on ztn2dm3, just simple stuff like that to help newer players out dueling.

Think there is any interest?

http://tastyspleen.net/quake/forums/index.php?board=21.0 :???:

i meant useful in depth per jump tutorials, of USEFUL jumps needed to play, not jump mod masters only sorta jumps... i was thinking of tutorials with a screenshot of each single part of the jump, breaking it down into sections, and explaining how to do the jump in a systematic way for consistency so that newer players can do things like get the megahealth on dm1 without having to rj :) or get the railgun right off the spawn on ztn2dm3, and not only that, but organizing all the tutorials into a single place :)

SEARCH BOI.

This is very old and I wasn't a very good jumper (im still pretty bad), but it covered most of the dm1 basics.

yeah :) cept maybe with screenshots to get a little more depth into the jumps, and for all the tdm/duel maps that the jumps become really important on

like the mh to rail jump on rdm2, could talk about how if you do it in 4 jumps you want to start from a near stand still flat against the back wall and slightly to the left and strafe jump once left then start strafing back right and blah blah blah breaking the jump down with demo and screenshots :) making it very easy to understand and idiot proof... a bit more in depth than what you did :)

im really just wondering if there is any interest... because i could do tutorials just fine :) even though im not exactly a defrag player :P but i wont bother doing them if it isnt gonna help anyone, seeing as how the quake2 comunity is pretty old the newer players that would benefit from them might not even see the forums

with no due respect, if people need babyfeeding relatively easy jumps they'll probably never learn it anyway, if they can't grasp it from a demo and explanation. highlighting every single thing about jumps is silly because theres so many different ways you can do each one, just slight differences, but enough to make one way not work if you try it the same as another.

well NEWER players wouldnt understand that this is how you do a jump off the edge of the stairs :) key presses and stuff not showing up in demos could make it kinda hard for newer players to understand that say... if your gonna do the dj off the stairs to the armor shards outside on dm1, you have to walk forward slightly first to get forward moving momentum, and then look slightly into the stairs (both can be seen from a demo so far) but hold left strafe so that you can double jump off the stairs more effectively :) and if your not going fast enough and are barely gonna miss, switch mouse movement back the other way, and switch to holding right strafe, to slightly air strafe over just a few more qu, stuff like that cant be seen in a demo for newer players, although more experienced players may pick up on it...

everyone has to start out somewhere, and ive noticed some newer players on the servers lately who cant do things like the mh jump on dm1 :)

but im gathering you dont think it would be useful at all lol

it might be useful for 1 in 5 players, if you have free time go for it. but most of the basic stuff is so not difficult anyway, the concept just seems overkill with screenshots and shit. I taught a guy at my uni to do the megajump in less than a minute, over the net not in real life. if people have a brain these things are simple

there's the screenshots of a couple maps from julious still, there's also more jumps than before.

it would be very cool to have a page that showed all the old and recent jumps on a few maps, and you could click the screenshots and watch an embedded video of the jump.

screenshots wouldnt be hard :P just run my own demo and hit the ss key whenever something new occurs in the jump, so like 10 seconds to get screenshots, and then like 5 minutes for a post here on the forums with the pictures and an explaination tearing the jump apart and breaking it down :) like for each jump though... eh... i guess there isnt really the demand :/ just figured id ask because i could do it and it would be nice for newer players
