I have a shareware version, but i know that there's some kind of minor preliminary security for the shareware. The message "Missing file spike.mdl" comes to mind for some reason.

Interesting.  I would have supposed, once the source was GPL'd, that it would now be possible (if not exactly ethical), to remove any such checks and recompile?

(Haven't looked into it though, so just guessing...)

maps have been released to the public.  If you could find model/sound/texture replacements you could have the whole game for free.

Yeah why spend so many man hours on open arena when open quake1 should have been the first priority. For shame!
