I just got a new rig and installed q2....I lost everything, my paks, my cfg, etc--was wondering if any of you fine people could post a link to a good pak or 2?

If you want to throw together your own customized pak, I have a large portion of my site dedicated to doing just that. Go to the "pak item archives". You can browse and download several individual /pic items like numbers and weapons icons, etc. The sounds are not really on an individual download basis. They are grouped into different zip files based on the type of sound. The models section is pretty scarce for now, I may expand it at some point in the future. No map textures, although my latest Focalor's Pak v2.0 contains lots of hi-res textures. http://focalor.tastyspleen.net

I also have my own 2 personal paks posted in the "pak files" section for download along with one of Elysiums brightskins paks.

Why do ppl use paks?

It doesnt makes u to a better player.

I dont use any paks and will not do either.

I have just modified my cfgs a little.

The paks destroys the feelings of
how q2 actually looks like, same
for other clients and modified engine.

Im still on quake2 v3.20.

I agree to a certain extent. In my opinion, it does help a little. As far as config goes, I have my weapon handedness set to CENTER to remove the gun from the view. The guns can take up 25% of your view. In some situations, there might be someone with a rocket pointed at you right where your railgun would be, it helps to be able to see as much around you as possible.

I don't like how the stock health and ammo numbers look. In a fast paced game, you want to be able to glance down and quickly be able to read how much health and ammo you have before deciding to engage an opponent... or even flee from them as quick as possible to seek more health and armor. That's why I use the red digital numbers that flash gradient yellow when health or ammo is low. The stock Q2 numbers are kind of camo colored and boxy looking. At a quick glance you might mistake a 6 for an 8. The digital ones are brighter and easier for me to see.

 Since I fire from the center and can't SEE what gun I'm currently holding, I like to have an icon pic that is quickly identifiable which lets me know what weapon I am currently holding. The stock Q2 weapon icons are not that easy to see. That's why I use larger pictures of the weapons as they would appear as an item on the map.


I use sounds in my pak too. One great sound to have is a grenade timer. It helps in the heat of combat to have a robot voice doing the counting for you so that you can focus more on maneuvering into a position to throw the grenade while dodging fire. Having to count 3-2-1 in your head is just a pain in the ass.

Even though I like using a lot of customized things in a pak file,... like you, I do still want to keep the game looking pretty original. I've seen lots of other paks that have tons of custom map textures. I never really liked how any of them looked, they all looked very out of place. When testing out those paks in a multiplayer game, you'd see brickmasonry walls which are modern, right beside the stock textures of metal pillars with the strogg skull logo, which is supposed to look futuristic. I hated the way that looked. I finally found some hi-res textures. It kept with the original look of the game maps, just sharper and more detailed.

As far as clients go, I was VERY reluctant to use another client besides the 3.20 original. When I began playing in the NAiL tourney, it was required that everyone use an AntiCheat compatible client. When I first started using R1Q2, it was a lot different. It threw my mouse aiming way off. I had gotten used to playing with the WinXP mouse enhancement, which R1Q2 disables. After a while, I finally got the feel of it. Now I like R1Q2 much better, I wouldn't want to use 3.20 anymore. Also, when you use AntiCheat along with it, no one can accuse you of wallhacking or using spiked models and other illegal modifactions.

well they can accuse you, but they'd be stupid to bother.

I use R1Q2 and anticheat as well, and occasional I'll get called a bot, then type "aclist" in the console, and lo and behold I'm using anticheat and they aren't.

It turns out to be a nice way to shut people up, who think you're botting/walling etc..
 


R1Q2 also has some fixes to security and the netcode that make it superior to the 3.20 client without being as different from the stock game as most other alternative clients with only a few exceptions.

The netcode is much better and would definitely help you overcome that high ping and lag and overflow problems.

about the biggest difference with my setup over the stock one is my bright weapons pak and elysiums brighter (but not ugly solid color) player skins.

I use gl_modulate 10 so the stock weapons and players just dont match up to the exceptionally bright map around them.
