Free Windows XP SP2 CD
« on: September 01, 2004, 12:41:51 AM »

For those of you on Dial-Up, or if you just want to have it, Microsoft is giving away Service Pack 2 CD's for free:

SP2 CD

I ordered mine on the 26th, and I got it on the 31st, five days is pretty fast, since they tell you it will be four to six weeks.

If you have friends and family that need it, Microsoft gives you full permission to share it.

If you never installed SP1, don't worry, you can still use this.  It installs all the updates you need.

I had ordered mine previously when they had a link up for a few days (and then dropped the link).  Anyway, it came last week.   I still haven't installed it because my first attempt at installing the "IT" version of SP2 was a mess.  It's no different than any other version...it was just a full download to make it easier for network admins to install.  Anyway, took me the better part of a couple of hours to recover from that since I couldn't even boot into safe mode to uninstall it.  I'm going to sit on it for awhile, heheh.

This shouldn't give you any problems.

Before I got the CD, I did a format and clean install with the one I downloaded and had no problems.

I just got the CD in case I ever do another reinstall, sometimes I do every couple of months.

With all due respect, one shouldn't have to format/clean install to patch software.  That's pretty draconian.  Whether one should have a problem or not is immaterial.  The fact of the matter is many people ARE having problems with it.  Not good.

MS's biggest problem right now is the fact that SP2's firewall is enabled by default, which poses all kinds of potential issues for IT Departments in corporations.  That was a lack of forsight on their part.
