speed of light (wave propagation) = 186,282 mi/sec

latency = 88,932 / 186,282 = 0.477 seconds

I had hughesnet for 15 months. while nice because we couldn't get DSL at the time, even at $85 a month we couldn't download much, the speed was relatively slow (1.5mbs compared to 3mbs DSL), a TON of non-specific rules & reg's. It took me TWO DAYS to get out of them the exact amount I could download before I 100% lost my net connection. then I had to UNPLUG my modem for 24 hours before it would be restored. I had such a bad experience I won't recommend it to anyone unless you do nothing more then check e-mail. Honestly, I'd rather shotgun two 56k's together.

yeah satellite sucks. you should probably run everything over IPSEC with VPN accelerator, and it will still be very slow. many protocols don't like the latency.

you drop a packet and tcp scales the window size (how much data to send before an acknowledgement), and that's not good if you have to wait so long. the VPN accelerator is good, because it makes a VPN work more efficiently, so it helps your connection. even when you do ping, sometimes you gotta use -w 5 (5 second timeout), or it times out on satellite links.

throughput calculated as rate, and p is packet loss
Rate <= (MSS/RTT)*(1 / sqrt{p}) and bandwidth=rtt/windowsize
first equation is tcp congestions effect on throughput, second is available bandwidth given the round trip time, and tcp window size

not only does it suck given the round-trip-time, protocols also have issues

that's what I play on right now & have no issues. It largely depends on the quality of the hardware & signal.

So Satellite wireless is out of the question for online gaming - just for downloading stuff. Well I guess that's what 95% of the world does mostly anyway. Its odd though because when I was out in Nova Scotia a few times, the places I stayed at only had wireless internet ie a wireless router somewhere in the building. The connection was good. Aliant Canada, which serves the whole of the Maritimes, is aggressively putting in internet access everywhere in the province. But they always refer to it as "wireless". Aliant is a subsiduary of Bell Canada I believe. So maybe there's some DSL technology in there somewhere.

Wireless is fine for the avergage user that checks their email, posts stupid pictures on their gay myspace or jerks off to online porn. Wireless anything does not mix will for gaming. That chance of latency loss or disconnect is enough to scratch it off the list. How often does the wire fall out of your mouse or your network cable out of your computer? (unless you break your shit of course)

Its happened a few times when I threw my mouse across the room at the wall. USB plug popped right out. Its getting expensive both for the plastic parts missing from the mice and the dents in the drywall.
