OS & browser
- XP pro SP2 / Firefox 2.0.0.11

Did the gears demo work for you?
- Worked just fine. I noticed that moving the scrollbar up and down in Firefox affects the rotation speed of the gears.

Did you have to install anything to get it to work?
- I already had the Java Runtime Environment installed (only b/c my niece likes to play those stupid webbased games:P). I did get one popup: 'Update deployment.properties?', which asked me if it was alright to disable Java2D's use of DirectDraw.

If so, how long did it take to perform the installations?
- About two clicks plus a couple of seconds to actually read and understand the popup message.

Was it fairly painless, or a hassle?
- No problem although I'm normally a bit reluctant to install anything that pops up in my browser.  :smiley_aaou:

WinXP SP2 / Firefox worked fine, although it prompted to run the applet, then prompted to disable DirectDraw and finally recommended I restart my browser! Maxed out CPU while running.

Using Vista with IE7 on an HP 17" laptop, high end vid card and lots of RAm and CPU. It asked to download a Java appelet which I did. I said "no" to the disable Direct Draw thingee. The wheels ran fine, anyway .......

Does this little "gears" demo run in your browser?
NO

I'd be interested in knowing, for example:
  - What OS and browser you are using?
Win2kpro, IE6.0.2800
Quote
  - Did the gears demo work for you?  (You should be able to click and drag with the mouse to change the camera angle.)
NO

install what?

Hmmm... This should be the manual download link:

http://javashoplm.sun.com/ECom/docs/Welcome.jsp?StoreId=22&PartDetailId=j2re-1.4.2_16-oth-JPR&SiteId=JSC&TransactionId=noreg

Either the "Windows Online Installation, Multi-language" or "Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language" should work.

I hope the OpenGL demo will work on win2k!  Installing the JRE should be harmless, if you want to give it a try.  (My wife's comp runs win2k also, I'll try that later this evening.)

Thanks,

quadz

I don't know who all here is a developer, but do you think you could add a "Programming" section for us newbs so we can ask questions about general quake 2 codeing.

I actually think that's a good idea. I was cruising some of the other q2 related forums out there, and they have some tech/programming/networking/etc junkies like us posting in nicely laid sections. Some threads I've seen are things such as "I'm setting up a home network (more than a 5-bedroom house mind you) and it's all going to be DIY. Everything from house wiring, wall plates, what kind of router/switches/hubs, what kind of cable, etc etc etc."    I've found some of these threads on other forums to be informative as well as tempting to post my own experiance (CCNA, php, c, etc) and maybe some ideas for others to comment on...  I agree with adding a 'tech junkie' section or whatever you feel the need to call it.

Yay...!  It does work on win2k.  Tried it in Firefox and IE6.

Oddly, on this old wik2k system which is like a Pentium III or something, in IE6 the gears took practically 0% CPU, whereas in Firefox it took almost 100% CPU...  :dohdohdoh:

Tried this on my new rig I just built.  So this time it's with an ATI card & not an IGP Intel POS.

  - What OS and browser you are using?

WinXP SP2, all updated.  Latest Firefox: 2.0.0.11

Quote
  - Did the gears demo work for you?  (You should be able to click and drag with the mouse to change the camera angle.)

Yes.  Perfectly

Quote
  - Did you have to install anything to get it to work?
Quote

Well, need the OS, drivers, browser, java... :D  Downloaded the applet & that was it.

Quote
  - If so, how long did it take to perform the installations?  Was it fairly painless, or a hassle?

piece of pie.  ;)

I did the installation and it works fine now.
Took a couple minutes to install on this dinosaur with 10+ windows open.
No reboot.
No adverse effects that I can tell.
