thats a common misconception by lower tier players :/

do better players use modified sounds for an edge? no, i actually dont know of any tourney players that do... they just do stupid shit like change out the mh sound to say "ive got the power!" or like me, come from q3 and change out the armor sound to ching instead of the annoying default... timers are standard play in europe yeah, but in america we disallow them on tourney, not to mention a good player can time just as well without timers, though some euros need em as far as louder sounds for something like footsteps or rail hum, anticheat will show modified footsteps on all US servers, same with rail hums and such, but i actually play with s_ambient 0 cause i see little to not advantage of even having rail hum on and it just bugs me

do better players use bright skins to see you when they otherwise couldnt? likely no, i use bright skins cause its a convenience factor, i could spot you just as fine with normal skins, because IN STOCK QUAKE2 there is the appropriate settings to the graphics to make it so you can see everyone at any time, no issue there

do better plaeyrs use modified clients for boosts in aim and jumping? no, they dont assist at all, almost all of us could drop into a normal q2 install, and after setting it up to be what we are used to (sensitivity settings and such) could aim just as good, and might even jump better some people have said that r1q2 and aprq2 just dont jump as good as 3.20 q2

the r1q2 client is freely available to anyone, and it may help you enjoy the game more with some of its features, but they are not advantageous to a point where it would affect the game

if you would benefit from some settings in r1q2 (not benefit skill wise, but just enjoyment of playing), and you have the time to set it up, you are stupid for not doing so

i would even go as far to say that people running r1q2 with anticheat are on an even more level playing field than people who use random clients or stick with 3.20

i have seen players on just about every major client do well: r1q2, aprq2, q2pro, egl, and even stock 3.20

Most of your complaints about modifications aren't cheats. You could learn how to play with Q2 stock and thus the player using custom sounds and bright skins won't have an advantage vs you anymore. He wouldn't even have one in the first place if you used those mods yourself. When it comes to more accurately discerning what is cheating and what's not, it's better to deduce whether or not a player would have an advantage from accessing hidden information that's not normally available from the game itself, while also maybe doing so by modifying the game's code. Things like aimbots and wallhacks do that.

Really the bright skin argument is hard to sell I'd say these days. Even Quake Live, an official ID Software Quake game comes with bright skins an optional feature, which even casual players use once another player or their friends tells them about it. 

As for the David angle, it doesn't really help your argument and makes it look like you don't know what your talking about it. Just save it for that thread in l33t demos.

think quakelive actually does brightskins by default now... or did at one point during dev, dont know for sure but i know it happened at one point

I have used r1q2, and now have gone back to stock 3.20 Q2. I consistently do well with only tweaking what I can in game no mods.

I swore by stock q2 for a loooong time, and consistently did better than anyone in usa that was using the same(unmodified, stock q2). And now look at me, very thankful for my pak/settings...

I'm just pointing out that although that makes excellent reasoning for your own preference, that's not so accurate with the comparison that was being discussed here..

Whatever floats your boat, not arguing against any mods just stating that I prefer the original. The only thing I might consider in the future is some different retinals , think i need to make my own or something..
