I recently bought a 19" LCD monitor and the native resolution is 1440x900. I'm not quite sure what other resolutions it can handle without screwing it up. So i'm wondering is there a way i can force my native rez in quake?? If its possible, could someone tell me how? THANKS!!

What client are you useing?
I use EGL with a 17" LCD with a native resolution of 1280 x 1024 and had to set it manually in the "eglcfg.cfg" file.
seta vid_width "1280"
seta vid_height "1024"

gl_mode is one of the resolution commands in Q2, but it only does the standard ones that are in video options. Just use one of those. My desktop res is 1024 with a 17 in monitor but in Q2 I play in 640.

The gl_mode cvar, as Ghost said, utilizes the standard ratios... using vid_height and vid_width (or customheight depending on your port) would be the way to go.

Use r1q2 and r1gl.
If that resolution isn't in the menu, add this to your .cfg.
Code:
[Select]
vid_forcewidth "1440"
vid_forceheight "900"
