Speaking of Ginger Baker......here's a good, live rehearsal clip of Cream doing Sunshine of Your Love. The quality is quite good and the camera follows them right on the stage. I think what made this song was Baker's putting the accent on 1 and 3 instead of 2 and 4. It's funny to see the early "psychedelic" clothing. But I like the simple trio setup, free of high-tech. The roots of modern rock...

Oh, and in case you have trouble playing one of the easiest rock songs in existence, there are some tutorials there as well.

This is the set of my favourite (it is actually off-topic, but you are free
to ignore this post) drummers:

Charly Antolini (Several bigbands, Charly Antolini's Jazz Power,
Charly Antolini ("Knock out"), cooperation with many great,
                 international Jazz musicians)
        http://drummerworld.com/Videos/charlyantolinicaravan.html
(The duration of this piece is 14min, but you won't regret it!)

Billy Cobham (Miles Davis, George Benson, Mahavishnu Orchestra)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYBTBv_h4CQ

Dennis Chambers (Bill Evans, John Scofield, John McLaughlin)
        http://drummerworld.com/Videos/dennischambersstudio1.html

Dave Weckl (Chick Corea Electric -and Acoustic Band, Mike Stern)
        http://drummerworld.com/Videos/davewecklsalsa.html

Louie Bellson (Duke Ellington Orchestra, Count Basie, Louie Bellson Bigband)
        http://drummerworld.com/Videos/louiebellsonbigsolo.html

Jack DeJohnette (John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans, Miles Davis,
                 John Abercrombie and many more)

(Gary Peacock is one of my favourite bass players)

Haha, they look baaaaaaked. :blunt:

Thanks for the link.  BTW, before someone gets on my case - I mentioned Ginger Baker not for his technical chops (or lack thereof), but because he has an uncommon style and has produced some beats that even after all these years still have a unique quality to them.

I'm curious as to what you guys think of Danny Carey.Β  I've never been really big into Tool, but I've got respect for this guy.

I think he's an outstanding percussionist. I saw them live in 1998 at Wonderland and it was a really exceptional show.

I think he's an outstanding drummer, although he's not particularly impressive from a flare and "let's see how many notes we can cram in there" point of view... but that's fine with me. That kind of virtuosity doesn't impress me anymore. What I find to be so likable about his style and playing is how perfectly it fits with the rest of the band. He doesn't just keep the rhythm-clock for the songs, he actually makes the drums a vital part of the tunes, which isn't something that all amazingly skilled drummers do as well as he does. From a music writing standpoint, the true power and talent in a band is how close of a relationship you can form between the rhythm guitar and the drums, especially in transitional parts of the songs like breakdowns and where differing verse riffs meet.

I thought I had posted this video before when I mentioned Danny Carey, but I guess I didn't.

Reminds you of live performances you see where the band's physicality is like over-acting. You know, it's like you want to say to them" Hey man - the song's not THAT good...."

Ray Luzier. Never heard of him before, just came across him on YouTube.

I dunno about "best" drummer, but this guy is definitely "good." Not very familiar with him, apparently the majority of his work has been with Korn from 2010 until present. NOT a fan of Korn at all, but after seeing and hearing this guy play... eh, maybe I could start to be. I dunno.

its also good to show that you've looked outside what is probably the most successful (best?) rock band of all time.

The Beatles?   :lolsign: :dohdohdoh:

But Ringo was a crappy drummer.

I think I was probably serious about that statement at the time. HOWEVER... I've come to learn that perhaps Ringo deserves a little more credit than most people are willing to give him. I've since seen a few videos on youtube discussing him and how his talent for stamina is often overlooked by people who criticize his apparent lack of technical flare and think everything he played was "easy". It may have been "simple" in structure, but not necessarily "easy" to play physically.

Gene Hoglan

Gene playing along with Death - Overactive Imagination (from the album Individual Thought Patterns, 1993)
He's always said he's a "lazy drummer" and I've always chalked that up to him just being humble, but as someone who's listened to Individual Thought Patters about a million times since it came out in 93, and after listening critically to his playing here, he's a tiny bit sloppy on some parts. He misses a few hits here and there, nothing too serious.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3opnYkuYQc

Gene playing along with Death - The Philosopher (from the album Individual Thought Patterns, 1993)
Hard to pick a number 1 favorite song by Death, but if this one isn't number 1, it's definitely in the top 3 for me. I love the unusual waltz beat for the verse.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGope68pHf0

Full version of his drumming technique video, Gene Hoglan - The Atomic Clock (2010).

Thomas Lang drum solo.  At around 2:05 he becomes super human. He also does a great impression of Arnold in another video.
